They are not waterproof. They are brushed DC motors with vent holes in the case and enameled magnet wire coils similar to most small motors in construction. You can operate DC motors in pure distilled water but eventually you will get corrosion. In dirty or salty water you get problems faster. If you want to use these on a toy boat or submarine, use a long propeller output shaft with o-ring seals and/or long oiled bushings to keep the motor away from water. Magnetic couplings that transmit torque from motor to prop could also work.

So if i just hook these up to a led etc, and turn them, it will generate dc power? or is there a another whole conversion needed?

They output DC. I used them in a windmill project and was getting 2 to 3 volts, more than enough for an LED. With some proper gearing you could get a lot more. The wires on them are pretty thin, I had to tin them to use them with Arduino.

Will they hold up to rain? Or would they need a shield of some kind?
