The bench attaches to the wall and can be folded flat against the wall. Yes, you can use the bench by itself without a rack. We bought our set in separate pieces to separate the cost of the total gym. The bench was one of he first things we got. While there isn’t a pad for your head specifically, the entire bench is padded.
