Always the best
I love this series but I find that while I used to be able to sympathise with Lysaer's tragedy, I find myself disliking his brand of justice more and more as he manipulates it to fit his intentions.

Things get very ugly in Athera
I've read several reviews complaining of Janny's prose being overdone and convoluted. I see where this is coming from, and I have on occasion 'rested' from reading this heavy series by reading something light. And yet, when I do, I truly miss this world and hurry back to it as fast as possible. When you are in the midst of it, the words almost create an aura of magic such that I could die happy wrapped in its beauty. :)In this book, Arithon heals from one trauma only to plunge himself into the middle of another. His doofus brother, Lysaer, has gotten himself wrapped up with some necromancers and Arithon has to try to save the world (and his brother, btw) from their dark and nefarious crutches. Elaira is shut off from their empathic connection during this process and she (and I) nearly die of fear for his life. More of the heart stopping action, the beautiful soaring prose, and the gradual revelation of the mystery that weaves the world of Athera into such a magical and beautiful place. The only drawback is that one more book read brings me one book closer to the ending of this bewitching, compelling, and marvelous tale.

The Grand Dame of High Fantasy
Janny Wurts is among my favorite authors. Why? Because she consistently writes high-quality fantasy stories that ring with beautiful prose, great worldbuilding, and interesting characters. Her fantasy novels are ripe with poetic language, and they are a slow burn. That means the writing is meant to draw the reader into a lush, and vibrant, world that is on par with Robert Jordan, Stephen R Donaldson, Brandon Sanderson, George RR Martin, Steven Erikson, and Tolkien. Yes. She is that good. And this series is her best work. I believe she is the fantasy equivalent of the great historical novelist Dorothy Dunnett. I cannot give her much higher praise than that.
