A great reel
I have fished with the Diawa Goldcast reels for 20+ years now, and have caught thousands of fish. I mainly use the GC100 for bass in Northern NY with a 20 lb PowerPro braided line and plastic worms. I have tried literally every model of spincast reel that I could find, and I always come back to this one. It produces few line tangles, as long as 1) you do not try to overload with line, and 2) you keep the line tight during retrieves. I typically catch 3-4 lb bass, but have caught many 10 lb pike as well. I have even caught many 20-30 lb striped bass off MA using the slightly bigger GC120 with 30 lb braid. The only weakness seems to be the pickup pin, which wears down after a LOT of use. I get new ones from Diawa and replace as needed. I gave my brother a couple 20 years ago; he does not fish as much as I do, but his reels are still working fine. A couple of mine may be in the 20-yr old range, and generally last pretty well. Overall, I think the Diawa Goldcast reels are great products if you hate the line tangle issues with spinning and casting reels.

A jewel of a spincast reel
Although light weight, it is very nimble and fun to fish with. I've used it a few times and have great casting distance. It is so much fun with a large fish, but have to work it a little more than when using a larger reels. Don't know about durability, but it appears well made.

Nothing Fancy - A Good Solid Basic Reel
Some time back I bought a Fenwick Methods Bait Casting Rod. A great versitle rod that comes in five pieces and can be made up into any of 4 separate rods each with a different power and action. I use this same rod to fish for trout in Wyoming as well as Bass in Texas, I just put it together differently for each situation. However, I have had trouble finding a quality closed face reel that fits it. At first I tried a Zebco Omega Pro3, (a quality reel), but the foot is to thick to fit the Fenwick. Other reels fit but didn't have the quality I was looking for. To make a long story shorter I finally happened on this Daiwa and it fits the bill. It's foot is thin enough to mount on the Fenwick and it's a quality reel like the Zebco Pro3. I gave it 4 stars because the line it came loaded with wasn't so great. Even though the write up billed it as a good professional line. Well, not compared to the Trilene fluorocarbon line I replaced it with. Also there is a lot of play in the drag adjustment dial but it functions. It doesn't have as smooth a feel retrieving line as the Zebco but this observation is a pretty picky one. So, all and all I'd say it's a great real and I would recommend its purchase. By the way my Abu Garcia Revo SX fits on the Fenwick fine, (it also has a thin foot), but it's not a closed face reel. Hey Zebco, why are the feet on your reels so thick.

Best Spin Cast Reel
These have been great reels. I have always owned Daiwa Silver cast and Gold Cast. I have some silver cast reels that must be as old as me that still work great. Throws light weight lures or crawlers for trout. This is all I use on my small pond trout set ups. Perfect with a 6lbs line. Pair it with a light action rod. Still plenty of reel for larger trout as well.

Smooth casting
The reel is light weight and smooth casting. Nice drag for bigger fish

Drag Knob Broken - Unusable
Bought this for my dad for Christmas. By the time he used it, we were outside the Amazon return window. The drag knob was totally frozen in place and didn't work. Totally useless, waste of money. Very unhappy. Poor quality.

Literally worse than a child's reel
I got this because its construction seemed like it would work better with 10-20lb braid than other spincasters, but the mechanism tangles braid within much worse than any other spincast reel I've ever used. I should've just purchased another silvercast. Simpler, cheaper, and more reliable. I have a small Silvercast that's been utilizing hair-thin 5-lb braid like a boss for a year, but this Goldcast can't go a few hours without eating heavier braid. NON-BRAID RELATED GRIPES: The threads on the cap are horrible and super fiddly to get started. The Most frustrating spincast cap I've ever encountered. The handle bends very easily for a reel with a premium price tag (for a spincaster). I can think of a large bass in my local creek who hates this reel more than I do: the 4-pounder who's swimming around right now with about 15 feet of line attached to its mouth because this reel mangled the line. When I opened it up the line was black and worn from where it had become lodged under the spool. I have two My Little Pony combos that have had the same braid this reel eats, without problem, for over a year without changing. The MLP reels have also landed far more fish because a tangled, non-functioning reel catches zero fish. TL;DR: Cheap My Little Pony reels outclass the Goldcast.
