Yes it can be used with out a hearing aid.

the extension does not fit into the microphone jack. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, it is sometimes a tight fit. But it does fit with a little extra pressure, adn you will not break the cord or the microphone. feel free to call Williams Sound at 800-843-3544 with questions.

would these work with sony mdrrf985rk wireless rf headphone

Must purchase special adapter from William Sound to use other manufacturers earphones. Your Sony headphone will only have audio to one side only without the adapter. Purchase the adapter and enjoy nicer sounding headphones.

Does this work for live theater?

The Pocketalker is basically a "glorified" microphone...so it will pick up any sound...you'll hear live theater "louder", but you might also hear more background noises than you would prefer. An FM Transmitter/Receiver system is best for live theater if you can get the Transmitter mic. close enough to the stage.
