Can I compost cat feces with this system? I also have a 100% biodegradable litter i use can this be composted as well?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can compost cat (and other pet) waste in a bokashi composter, but its best to be treated separately and we wouldn’t recommend simply adding it to your a bin that you use for food waste.

The bokashi fermentation process helps to kill pathogens in the waste. You have a couple of different options: Some people simply use a regular bokashi bucket (exclusively for pet waste) and follow much the same approach as for fermenting food waste. Add your waste (ideally unbagged), sprinkle with bran and repeat until the bokashi composter is full. Then leave to ferment for a couple of weeks and dig it into your soil. It depends how strong your stomach is and whether you like the idea of emptying and digging in a bucket full of fermented pet waste!

Alternatively, you can make your own bokashi container for dealing with your pet waste. Find a 5 gallon (or larger) bucket with a well sealing lid. Cut the bottom of the bucket and bury it almost entirely in your garden (away from any places that you grow vegetables and/or children/pets may play). Put your pet waste into this container and sprinkle with bokashi. Repeat. The life in your soil will do most of the work so that you can keep adding pet waste on the top and you should see the level continuously going down. If you should fill your container, then pull it out of the ground (leaving the fermented waste behind) and relocate. Cover the initial area with at least 6 inches of soil.

Note that although the bokashi composting process will help to kill the harmful pathogens found in pet waste, it is recommended that you bury the fermented pet waste at least 2m from any areas where you grow fruits or veggies.

Will compostable plastics break down in this system?

The bokashi microbes thrive on the sugars/carbohydrates that are present in food waste.  So the short answer is no, compostable plastics will not break down in the bokashi bin.  They will pass through the bin relatively unchanged.

How do you use this if you live in an apartment and only have pot plants?

Thanks for the question. There are lots of different options for making bokashi composting work in apartments and condos:
1. Make a soil factory
A soil factory is a simple way of converting your pre-compost to usable compost that can be applied directly to your plants and containers. This is a great way to store and process your bokashi pre-compost at times when you are not able to add it directly to your containers.
2. Bury your bokashi pre-compost at the bottom of containers and planters.
3. Donate your pre-compost to family, friends, schools and local community gardens.
4. Only make as much bokashi compost as you can use in your containers and planters.

Many people successfully use bokashi composting in condos and units with little, or no, outdoor space. It does require a little bit more ingenuity than for those with larger gardens and compost piles; but it is definitely possible.

How do we do rotation in a cold winter months? Should we add it to our compost bin or make tranches  in fall and fill them?

There are many options for winter bokashi composting, but if you have access to a regular compost pile/bin then putting it directly in there is an excellent choice.  Many compost piles/bins slow down and even fail during the winter, and adding bokashi during that time is a great way to bring life back to it.  Your spring time compost will be better than ever.
