Hi, I saw your posting and I have had the same problem. Happy to buy the seal but dont know how to install. Can you let me know where you were able to find instructions? Thank you!

1)  Turn off water supply
2)  Remove tank lid and flush all water
3)  Grab valve stem, turn 1/4 turn counter-clockwise until it clicks
4)  Lift and flip to expose the seal then replace
5)  Return valve/stem to the socket
6)  Turn stem 1/4 turn clockwise to lock in place
7)  Replace tank lid and turn on the water 
No need to disconnect anything.

why does the flush vavle close to soon sometimes?

Hi Ruth.  Most all new Kohlers are a water saver style toilet, and are designed to deliver two types of flushes.  First is the quick flush for urine, and that means you push down then quickly release the handle.  Less water is used so there is a water savings over emptying the tank.  Second flush type is for solids, and you simply hold down on the handle until the flush is complete.  All the water in the tank is used, but the newer tanks are smaller, so less water is used compared to the toilets of the 50's and 60's.  It's all about water savings.  No one thinks to tell you, eh? is this seal the same as the 1016219 for Kohler?

This seal, Kohler GP1059291, is the correct replacement for 1016219, and goes on the bottom of the flush canister.  The Kohler site is wrong.  The part they mention is actually the seal between the base and the tank.

Question 4

Why does the canister seal stick?  My becomes so stuck I cannot flush the toilet using the handle.

Chlorine in the water softens the seal and it becomes a sticky gum like material and the canister then sticks to it making it difficult to lift to flush. New yellow seal is more resistant to this. Definitely don’t put tablet type toilet cleaners in the tank or you will get to replace this seal frequently.
