Children should not just read about history, they should live it. In The Story of Civilization , the ancient stories that have shaped humanity come alive like never before. Author Phillip Campbell uses his historical expertise and story-telling ability together in tandem to present the content in a fresh and thrilling way. The Story of Civilization reflects a new emphasis in presenting the history of the world as a thrilling and compelling narrative. Within each chapter, children will encounter short stories that place them directly in the shoes of historical figures, both famous and ordinary, as they live through legendary battles and invasions, philosophical debates, the construction of architectural wonders, the discovery of new inventions and sciences, and the exploration of the world. Volume I, The Ancient World , begins the journey, covering the time periods from the dawn of history and the early nomads, to the conversion of Emperor Constantine. Children will learn what life was like in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece, Rome, and more, as well as learn the Old Testament stories of the Israelites and the coming of Christ. The strength of the content lies not only in the storybook delivery of it, but also in the way it presents history through the faithful prism of the Church. Review: Best Christian Homeschooling History Book Ever! - My son absolutely loved listening to the audiobook while reading along for his history class as part of our Catholic homeschool curriculum. He has a very difficult time staying focused when reading, so I was amazed by how much this book helped him stay engaged and actually enjoy learning history. This book is truly wonderful. It presents centuries-old history in a way that is simple, interesting, and easy for children to understand without making it feel boring or overwhelming. I honestly enjoyed it just as much as he did! We just finished the book, and my 10-year-old is already asking me to buy the next volume right now. Haha! If that doesn't say how engaging this series is, I don't know what does. ๐ I will absolutely be purchasing the next volume in the series. Seeing my son genuinely excited to continue reading and learning about history makes this book completely worth it. I highly recommend it, especially for homeschool families or children who normally struggle to stay focused while reading. Review: Great for homeschooling kids of all ages! - I use it to homeschool my 7, 8, and 10 year-olds. It's interesting enough to hold their attention, but full of enough information that I learn something new every time we read from it. I'm not sure about the rest of the series, but I see other religious beliefs treated with respect in this first volume (and I expect that it continues to be true). I like that it includes history that my kids also learn about from the Bible, which helps to create a fuller picture for them. My only complaint is that it doesn't contain very much history outside of eastern Europe and western Asia. There is some, but not much. At least half of the book is dedicated to Greek and Roman history. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for high school level with a little supplementation. I have also read Story of the World (the whole series) and taught using History Quest (volume 1 and 2). Story of the World was a little too simple, and I struggled to find it interesting. History Quest was a bit too wordy, and my ADHD kiddo had trouble staying focused, even when I broke it down into reading for just a few minutes each time. Story of Civilization is a nice middle ground. It has the same type of immersive story telling that you find in History Quest's "history hops" but without dedicating half the book to it. I'm very pleased with this book!

Awesome Book
Awesome curriculum for homeschoolers. If you have a student with high functioning autism/Adhd who struggles with history I highly recommend this book. We switched from Seton History to this for the time being and he loves it!

Engaging history text
I purchased the textbook and audio of Volume 1 for my 1st grader, and he LOVED it! I turned the audio into a Yoto card for him, and he listens to it all of the time! Itโs written in narrative format, so it is very engaging (both for me and my son). The audio is top notch! It is probably intended to be used as a history spine, but it would also just interesting if your child likes history.

Great info about ancient history
We use this book for homeschooling history and my daughter (8) loves it. The stories within the chapters are her favorite part. I feel like this is a great read aloud now and weโll be able to use it again as she matures in reading level. The audio version is great too!

Interesting points of view
Written for children but still good. There were few things I disagreed with and more I found myself enlightened. Happily.

Best History Book for Children, Excellent!
Awesome book! Susan Wise Bauer move out of the way. At last, a really great story teller with accurate information, beautifully drawn illustrations (could use more), and well organized. My child and I have really enjoyed learning about the ancient world. If only schools could use more books like this. My child loves to read through the book and do the activities. Campbell has inspired us.

Good
I ended up really liking this book- the first few chapters didnt impress me, but gradually I got pulled into it as a story line developed... and i guess thats the thing I like best about it, it has a thread running through it that connects all the stories, humankind's thirst for God. Unlike Story of the World, which a wonderful collection of largely independent stories, the Story of Civilization is one story with many chapters. I prefer a pretty writing style, maybe more old fashioned, but the writing is clear and steady. I was sorry there weren't more women, but to be honest that isnt a criticism just of this book, and he did try, I appreciated that. Any history spine needs to be fleshed out with other reading and I didnt expect this one to be everything! Overall I'm very happy and will buy the others, too.

Fantastic multi-age history spine for homeschooling
We are thoroughly enjoying this text so far. It is the spine for Ancient History studies this year for our Year 5 and Year 7 boys; so far they are enjoying both listening to the text, and doing the comprehension and craft assignments suggested in the Teacher's Manual (separate book). I reserved one star, because I think the text could do with some colour photographs (especially of primary evidence, archaeological sites, etc), and key points/an overview for each chapter. I prefer that follow-up questions and tasks be included in the text, rather than in a separate Teacher Manual - but this is merely personal preference, and may not be a drawback for other users.
