The first all-in-one edition of P.R. Spencer's classic penmanship primer including step-by-step lessons and pages for practicing. Easy to understand yet challenging to perfect, the Spencerian system was the standard for all personal and business correspondence in the 1800s. While modern students are barely taught cursive, for more than a century schoolchildren were dutifully drilled in intricate penmanship using this original primer. Now you can follow the step-by-step instructions and practice on the included workbook pages to learn: • The seven Spencerian principles • Proper pen positioning • Finger and arm movement • Heights and widths of letters • Spacing between letters and words • Optional shading effects With Spencerian Handwriting , you can add a personal touch to all your handwritten letters and notes reminiscent of simpler, more elegant times. Review: Great reference for teaching kids and adults! - This was great. I enjoyed the practice pages I thought the progression was very helpful and well done. From different strokes, to individual letters, connecting letters, and then sentences. The sentences were enjoyable to copy! Great background information at the beginning if you are interested in the history! I used it to learn and my step son also uses it as reference to practice at home since they are learning at school as well! Only thing I wish that my step son asked for was a reference page with the lowercase and uppercase all together alphabetically for reference instead of having to skip around when he looked since the order for practice goes through the progression of similar line work rather than alphabetical. Overall happy with my purchase compared to other books teaching Spencerian. Review: An Accessible, fun, educational treat! - This book was exactly what I was looking for. The drudgery of emails and our saturation with technology has really left me craving not only more creativity in all realms of my life. I started writing letters more to help with that but my handwriting was not even what it used to be--typing has clearly taken a toll! So I picked up this book and really really loved it. First of all, it's cheaper than most of the other books on this subject that I found. It was easy to read, easy to practice. I thought it was totally accessible and excellent. And I really do feel like my handwriting has improved and not even just that--I've found VARIETY in my handwriting. The cost and the practicality and all of it really was fantastic. I highly recommend it.

It's good but.....
This is a helpful guide but a little tough to follow. It's probably just me. I'll be looking for other penmanship guides to go along with this.

Dying art? Hardly.
It should be noted that if you already own all the Spencerian handbooks separately, this won't be new information. However, I was really glad to have extra practicing space, as I'd already completed the handbooks years previously. It was nice to revisit the work and have some better quality paper on which to resume my practice. I'm rating this book from the point of view of someone who doesn't own all the handbooks separately, because most people don't! Some folks may feel that elegant handwriting is a dead art-- in my mind, this couldn't be further from the truth. The distance we've all established from one another thanks to technology saddens me. People don't have tech-free conversations, sit side-by-side on the couch thumbing through photo albums or (I promise my grandma rant has relevance to the product) write letters to each other anymore. The dedication that is required to master Spencerian handwriting and enact it in a longer letter has the same benefits to relaxation and focus as coloring books do. Plus, being the person at work with the nicest handwriting means I get asked to do favors for higher ups, giving them a chance to think positively about me and my work. This is a valuable skill, and this primer is the classic way to learn it.

Great for adding some elegance to your penmanship
There's really noting more beautiful than a heartfelt handwritten letter or note, that is if said letter or note is legible. If you are already familiar with or own the previous editions of Spencerian handbooks it's probably not for you however maybe you want it in a more convenient way in which case go ahead and give it a purchase. Spencerian handwriting is elegant and not impossible to learn it seems, this handbook is the perfect guide to bring your letters to the next level. We have many means of communication these days, all of them have their place in my opinion, however if you want something to feel personal nothing rivals a handwritten letter. The personal touch is always nice but with this handbook you can definitely get your handwriting to be beautiful as well taking it to a whole other level without needing to use any emojis.

Relearning to write cursive in my 40s
Whoever taught me to write the first time didn't do a great job. This year I invested in fountain pens and this book and relieved a lifetime of hand cramping when I try to write, and my writing is mostly legible when I take my time now. (My speed scrawl is still just a vague suggestion of English.) I do wish I'd gotten the separate book and workbooks, they're really meant to be used in parallel, you'll have to flip from the principle discussion to the workbook page for that principle and back in this edition.

Its a work book, not a holy relic - just write in it.
My only quibble, and it is a small one is that the book could use a spiral binding. Would be easier to copy into if the pages laid flat. My solution was to just break the spine. The letters aren't in the order of the alphabet, but grouped according to how they are drawn. That is preferable, but makes a letter harder to find if you can't remember it properly. At first, I didn't want to mess up the book. BF copied some of the sheets, but then we risked "wasting paper," and he wanted to combine them, and print masters front and back.... GRRR. Enough with that! Finally started making good progress when I was actually copying IN the book itself - like it was designed. I'll order another if I want a clean copy.

Great Book
This is a compilation of the original books by Mr.Spencer. unfortunately it arrived with some damage but not enough to want to return it. That's not the book's fault. I'd recommend this version over the separate booklet for those of you who are looking to learn spencerian script.

Excellent grounding in calligraphy.
A little on the dry side but lots of information for the beginner.
