OPC UA: The Basics: An OPC UA Overview For Those Who May Not Have a Degree in Embedded Programming

A very small book, mostly useless
I did not expect any deep technical details from this little book, but after I have finished reading it I realized that it was just a waste of time, because it really did not have any meat in it. The book is mostly focused on repeating in various ways how awesome is the OPC UA and that it solves every possible problem of the industrial automation, but instead of explaining the fundamentals it is mostly juggling with acronyms and repeating common knowledge about web services. At the end of the "OPC UA CASE STUDY" chapter on page 55 the author says that "there are several ways to implement UA on this automatic door controller. That is the subject of a later chapter of this book". I read carefully to the end of the book ending on the 69th page and did not find anything about the promised automatic door controller UA implementation.

An overpriced second draft of a booklet about OPC UA
I have a few pretty serious gripes with this book.1. Lots of typos, bad grammar and outright nonsensical/incomplete sentences -- seems like the author didn't even attempt to proofread his drafts.1a. Lots of unexplained industry-specific abbreviations that are clearly just thrown around to impress the reader, while also sometimes incorrect explanations of abbreviations (TCP is "Transmission control protocol", NOT "Transport control protocol", for instance).2. Some paragraphs -- AND EVEN PAGES -- are copy-pasted verbatim between different chapters (c.f., pages 19-20 vs. 59-60). I understand the author's desire to emphasize certain things, but copy-pasting entire pages verbatim is not fulfilling that purpose, it's simply trying to make the book bigger than it is. Which brings me to the next point.3. The information density in this book is very small. There's too much padding and oftentimes obvious attempts to make the book seem more substantial.4. The book doesn't really go into anything substantial and can be hardly called a book -- more like a booklet! For instance, on page 55, the author writes "There are several ways to implement UA on this automatic door controller. That is the subject of a later chapter of this book." But on the remaining 12 pages of the book, there's no more mention of the automatic door controller.Other than that -- and really, those are pretty serious issues -- the BOOKLET does a decent job introducing what the basic point and essential capabilities of OPC UA are. It should simply sell for some 7 dollars, not 17.

Delivered as Promised
This is a high-level overview of OPC UA. It was a fairly light and easy read for a book about a networking protocol. It promises the basics of OPC UA and delivers that. If you want an in-depth protocol specification this book is not for you. The only complaint I have is that the organization and flow of the lessons was a bit choppy.

killer simple
Very simple, and I think it should be published in a journal column instead of a book, to save our time and money !good intro from the publisher but from my view it just a manager speech !

A comprehensive overview
A comprehensive overview with a practical insight into the use of OPC UA in industrial automation (recommend to beginner's level).
