Why is this thing so expensive? You can get a decent laptop for half the price that does way more.

Because it's a niche tool for a specific type of user, people are willing to pay more to get something niche like this plus it costs more to produce in the first place since they can't make as many in large bulk unlike more common devices.

For example, people buy eReaders like Kindle or Kobo all the time for $200 despite already having a phone or tablet that can read those same ebooks but often better. Why? Because the e-ink screen is easier on the eyes and it's less distracting while reading so people find the price worth it even if it's unnecessary. Same idea here, most people would be fine writing on their laptop but some people would rather pay a bit extra to not be distracted while writing.

How are you supposed to get the files off of the device without internet?

Thank you for writing in to us!

You can operate the Freewrite entirely offline! Files can be transferred from the Freewrite to your computer via the included USB cable. Your Freewrite is always saving your documents on the Freewrite and therefore is always accessible offline. You will not be able to access regular software updates, but that's not a problem.

Simply turn the 'wifi' toggle to {off} and you are ready to write offline!

Why is the price so extreme?  this could be created with a raspberry pi solution, inexpensive keyboard, and interface it to an eink display.
