I purchased this product to better manage my Reencle composter. Reencle doesn’t offer a “booster” microbe product and after 2 yeats the soil in the Reencle needed the following: * Jumpstart bacterial activity * Expand microbial diversity * Handle protein/fat inputs more reliably * Reduce/eliminate occasional odor (key signal of anaerobic imbalance) After some product research, I decided on the following products to address these goals: As the Primary Booster, I chose Roebic Bacterial Compost Accelerator (model CA-2.5-12). For Secondary Stabilizers, I chose: * Bokashi bran (1–2 tablespoons occasionally) to handle meat scraps. * worm castings (a small handful periodically) as a “reset tool” when odors occur. One Insight Most People Miss (Important): Compost boosters aren’t just about “adding bacteria,” they also: * Supply enzymes + nutrients that help bacteria multiply * Help restore the carbon:nitrogen balance indirectly Even if I’m consistent about these products, the microbial ecosystem can still drift over time—especially in a closed appliance. RESULTS: So far, this plan has been working perfectly! No issues at all. Reencle’s compost starter product is $65. This is the product used to get a new Reencle started. Their one bag does it all, but it’s a one-time, one use product. I suppose I could occasionally just spoon some in as a booster, but I wanted a solution that would boost a composter that has already been running pretty well for 2 years and give me the tools to fix problems commonly associated with composting. The combined cost of the three products listed above was about $75, but for $75 the quantity of products I have is a lot more than just one little Reencle bag. Not only is this approach more cost effective, I have separate products to address specific problems—basic boosting, handling of meat scraps, and odor control.

Fantastic product. Keeps my countertop compost stink-free and keeps the fruits flies away as well. Love this product. Just sprinkle a bit every time youput something new in the compst bin and voila! your're already breaking down the materials before you add it to your main compost bin.

Helps break down food scraps. Also, helps w/the smell. Jus wish it was a lower price.

I'm new to bokashi and have just filled my first 5-gallon bucket. The trash smells great (if trash can smell great), and I'm getting a regular supply of bokashi tea. I dilute the tea and water my plants with it. My intent is to make my own bokashi mix, but in the meanwhile I'm very satisfied with my purchase from SCD Probiotics. It was shipped in a timely fashion and it performs as it should. Until I make my own batch, which has to sit for 2 weeks before it's usable, I'm ordering another bag from SCD Probiotics. For the reviewer that gave them 1 star, I believe it was because the product wasn't used as it should. Bokashi mix is for bokashi fermenting, not for traditional composting. I haven't buried my fermented organic matter yet, and hope I remember to come back and post an update. In the meanwhile, I'm thrilled with bokashi fermenting and this bokashi mix does what it is supposed to do. May 9, 2012 - An update: My bokashi works as it should so I ordered another bag from SCD. I don't have a complaint about the bokashi bran, but I do have a complaint about the weight. According to their label I purchased 1kg or 2.2 pounds of bokashi bran. However, when I put the bag on the scale (properly calibrated postal scale), the actual weight is 857 grams or 1.88 pounds. I didn't expect it to weigh exactly 1 kg, but I think 857 grams is a bit far from 1 kg. The bag is unopened and in the same condition as when I ordered it. I still had bokashi mix left from my earlier purchase so there was no need to open it. I'm curious to understand how SCD measures and weighs its bran.

Works great to control odor in my indoor collection bucket. I throw in a small hand full every couple of days. It "prestarts" the composting process as we dump our indoor collection to the outdoor bins weekly. Used in this way a 2 lb bag lasts me about a year so don't be fooled by the size and price. Suggest that you keep the bag inside a metal can with a tight lid to deter mice.

It works great, but in less than a year, the price jumped 44% that’s outrageous!!! I bought it in September 2024 for $34 (5 lbs), and now in June 2025 it’s almost $49

I've read a lot of the reviews about this composting method, and seen the mixed opinions. I think I've tried everything to compost my kitchen waste, and I LOVE this form of composting. For those of you who hate it, yes, it's time-consuming and not as easy as described in the manufacturer's materials. If I could throw my kitchen waste into an outdoor compost heap without having to worry about attracting rats, I'd surely do so. But I live in the suburbs where rats are an ongoing problem. Yep, I inadvertently attracted a couple to my yard with trying various forms of composting, and it's a lot easier to attract them than to get rid of them. I've also tried worm composting, but just couldn't get the right moisture level, it took up a lot of space in my small house, and it just plain didn't work for me. I had great composting success with electric composters, but they kept breaking, didn't hold much at one time, and keeping a supply of pure pine nuggets was a pain. Both of these composting methods are also very limiting as to what kitchen waste you can include (no dairy, no meat); Bokashi isn't. It wasn't terribly long after getting my first Bokashi composting pail that I realized one wasn't going to be enough. The main thing about using Bokashi is that you can put anything food in it, so that means more gets composted than for the other methods I tried, and winter time isn't good for burying the compost. I also wouldn't want to have to deal with the second phase of the process based on having the pail be full (I want to be able to pick a time when I feel like doing that major chore). I find one pail lasts 1-2 months, but it might last only 1-2 days if doing some heavy-duty canning. I've also held treated scraps in another pail that allows drainage, and there are plenty of options if I need more space. While it took a great deal of work to build, I also have a rat-proof container I use for the final composting of the treated scraps. It is mostly buried and right next to my leaf composter; shredded leaves make a great odor barrier (avoiding rats again) as well as contribute to the overall completed compost. Having several pails means I only have to even think about dealing with the labor intensive part every 3-4 months. Having the rat-proof screened container for the final composting makes it easy to check to see if the previously buried compost is ready to be screened when I'm dumping in another batch. Some of the bigger items such as bones take a few cycles to completely decompose, so screening is important. I use the 1/4 inch hardware cloth lid to my rat-proof container for screening purposes. As far as the indoor component, I have a separate scraps container, so I treat and put in the Bokashi pail only every few days. Having the smaller container means I can easily assess just how much Bokashi to use. I had some problems at first, had to supplement dose hard to recover one container, but haven't had any issues this last year. I'll end by saying I tried someone else's Bokashi formula once, and I won't go there again. It had a powdery component that ended up in my face during use. SCD Probiotics' product is granular so it distributes smoothly where you put it. It's very consistent. One package lasts me about 2 months, so maybe saving $1-2 just isn't worth it.
