Good presentation
Admittedly, I selected "Welding: Everything You Need to Know (FFA)" for a family member who is graduating soon. He took classes on welding and woodshop and is looking to go into practical arts at the local community college which I find refreshing. So, I selected this book for him and he liked it a lot as it was easy to understand even on points that he was not yet familiar with. The "Everything You Need to Know" made sense to him. What I was surprised about was that I was able to read through it and understand. The author (Todd Bridigum) did a fantastic job at presenting the topic and point in a way that makes sense. There are points that were a little above my understanding but I got the gist of it. If I were younger, I'd re-think my career path or at least, my hobby path if I had access to space or a shop for welding.Anyway, it was one of my surprise reads of the spring. I enjoyed it a lot. Better yet, the young family member who the book was meant for is also finding it useful and informative.

Excellent Starting Point
I selected this book as much out of curiosity as I did to learn a little about something I knew almost nothing about. Welding is a skill that is in demand at the moment and precious few seem to show a lot of interest in it. I wanted to know more about it. This book is a fine introduction to the subject.I would stop short of calling this book a complete how-to or a learning manual for picking up the welding trade. However, it could very well be required reading in a course on the subject. It covers a wide swath of topics including types of welds, different materials needed and/or used, tools of the trade, welding safety and safety equipment, and a whole lot more. One of the prominent features of this book is an abundance of full-color glossy images that really illustrate processes, tools, equipment and more. It does not rely on grainy black and white images, illustrations or anything like that; it really shows the reader what the author is talking about in full color with clear detail. There's a tremedous lot to learn in this book and I am enjoying the read. It's not a full-up course book but it's excellent material that will give the reader a lot of understanding on the subject of welding.

Great Introduction to Welding
I have worked on the design side at several manufacturing facilities. I have to read through welding specifications and know how to apply them to a drawing, but I am not a welder. I have taken a few weeks of training in TIG welding in order to understand how it is done to aid in my design work. My training was very focused on the type of welding we used in the facility so I wanted to take a step back. This book was a great resource for that. It provides a comprehensive overview of the more common welding and cutting (plasma) methods. It is geared toward someone that has little experience in the field and structured like a supplement to a introduction to welding class. It gives a good amount of background information on each method, but stops short of providing a step by step guide on how to weld. It provides the basics, but wish each section would have been expanded upon making it more of a step by step guide at the tail end of each section. I still think this book is packed with useful information and is worth having if you are just starting out in welding. There are plenty of good pictures clarifying the text and the descriptions are easy to read.

Great introductory book on welding
I got this book because I'm interested in learning how to weld. This book covers the basics from safety to welding exercises in clear, down to earth language. It doesn't pretend to be an encyclopedia and doesn't cover everything in gory detail but it provides quite a bit of detail, lots of full color pictures and explanations about what you're looking at.It's no substitute for experience but it provides plenty of background knowledge to get you started on your welding education.

Good introduction
This book is a good introduction for people who haven't ever welded before. It goes over the types of welding, equipment, techniques, etc. While you could probably find a lot of the content on the internet, my experience is that for something like a trade such as welding, you're better off getting your feet wet from an official source, not random people. You'll find too much conflicting info and often advice that isn't geared towards beginners. This book will set you on the right path.

Comprehensive and Easy to Understand
My husband and son are working on a project car, and welding is something that they will be doing soon. They most likely will take a welding class, but I thought this would be a good book for us to get an idea as far as introduction. I say “us”, because I would like to know about the safety aspect. The audience for this book is young people (high school students). My ninth grade son thought the text was technical enough but not so much that will make your head spin. I like that the book starts out with safety and then tools. Other chapters include gas welding, torch and plasma cutting, arc welding basics, stick welding, and also some welding exercises. I like that the author stresses “ask an adult” if you don’t know. The photos are clear (with lots of close-up shots), and the text is easy to understand. Although it seems like a comprehensive book, I don’t think this book is meant to take the place of a welding instructor. It definitely is a good book for my husband and son to review, so they have an introduction to welding.
