Why is a paid sim necessary? satellite phones should let you call from anywhere without reliance on the network?

Thank you for your inquiry. Like most mobile communication devices, satellite phones connect to their network through a paid service such as a monthly plan or prepaid card. These services are facilitated by the SIM card inserted in the satellite phones. It's very similar to using a SIM card for cellular service only that satellite communications use a different network structure.

I drive for living and sometimes I go to Alaska and nother Canada which is the best card that will fit me best??

If only used in Canada and Alaska, then the Canada/Alaska prepaid is best. If you intend to use this in the Continental US or any other country, a Global card is necessary.

I am willing to buy a satelite phone for our Marine tugboat. Can we receive the call records (call made by this phone) from the service provider?

Not with a prepaid card. With a monthly service card you get a full usage breakdown on your invoice.

The phone can activate with USA phones numbers?

All Iridium phone numbers are Country code 8816. You have the option of a US based forwarding number if activated on Monthly Service. Prepaid Service has the ability to utilize Iridium's 2-stage dialing feature.
