The mouse pad slides out straight from the side of the tray.

does it keep the laptop from overheating?

It would not keep it from overheating. Although I love it, I do feel heat from my laptop, through the desk. Not as much as I would if the laptop was on my lap, but enough to be noticeable.

The thickness 1.5cm. It is easy to carry for travel and put into your computer bag.
