I usually twist them a little bit

I don't understand how to open it to put the picture in ?

Hi there, try pushing firmly near a corner and it should come up enough to completely remove and put the picture in. Hope this helps thank you.

Do you slide the picture or is it snap on?

Photo doesn't slide in... Lay picture on one side & Snap on the clear back. They are very durable... I have ordered 2 sets more.
