Does a version without the front pockets exist?

No, i don't think so, but then why would you want a pair without the front pockets, very useful

If you look in the pockets you will see adjusters that go through the ladder locks and secure to the Velcro. These adjust the height of the knee pads. Of course it makes the pockets almost useless for normal use. Was a surprise to me too.
