From the packaging: "Designed in Corona, CA and assembled by Corona in Mexico with parts from USA, Mexico, Taiwan and China."

How well does spring stay on? (I had different brand in past in which spring popped off one side or other after most cuts when handles were released)

The spring only holds the shears in the closed position. You squeeze them together and pull the catch away fro the clip. It stays free until you are done and then you squeeze the handles together and pull the catch to the clip to keep it closed.

What size is best for all-around use? 1/2", 3/4", or 1"? Thanks!

It really depends on what you are using them for. I would say for general garden use such as roses and shrubs 3/4 inch. For larger branches such as small tree branches and larger diameter shrub branches 1 inch. I have both sizes.
