Is there padding on the bottom (in addition to the sides) where the laptop goes?

No, not that I remember. I had to send mine back because it was too small for my laptop. It just had a padding on the sides. I wish I could have kept it but when they say 15 inches, it is exactly 15 inches. If your laptop is slight over or you like a little bit of room, this is not the one for you. If your laptop of pad is smaller than 15 inches, this will be perfect! Hope this helps....
