is this thermometer designed for candy cooking?

mine only reaches a temp of about 210 f. so mine would not work for the much higher temps needed for candy making.

Has anyone else experienced issues with the power button? I have to press power several times in the hopes it turns on. Sometimes it doesn’t.

Repeat problems. Replaced the batteries, it worked. Next time I go use it, won’t turn on again. Something constantly drains the battery. I believe it’s likely a defect. Would not buy again based on this ongoing issue.

Should the temp be at zero before inserting into meat or is it calibrated to start at a certain temp?

No - the temp doesn’t matter when you turn it on. Just insert into the food to register the temp of the food.

Is this for oven cooking ?

You can't leave it in the oven, if that's what you mean. But when roasting a turkey, for example, you open the oven door and poke the turkey with this thermometer to see if it's done. The advantages this particular thermometer has are the long probe (which keeps your arm out of the heat) and the ability to preserve the reading (so you don't have to stick your head in the oven to try to read the temperature while it's inserted into whatever you're measuring). We love it.
