Simply put, Sun Tzu’s message is that it is better not to fight than to become involved in a conflict. But if a conflict is unavoidable, then you must enter it with the intention of winning. The Art of War explores the often ruthless strategies that can help achieve that outcome. Niccolò Machiavelli takes a different approach in The Prince. If you are in a position of power and want to maintain it, being loved and respected is preferable. But if you cannot achieve both, then maintaining authority and commanding respect become essential. Machiavelli lays out the strategies sometimes ruthless and unsettling, that can help a ruler preserve power. The way I see it, if you're a politician in the party that generally wins elections and you don't particularly enjoy reading, The Prince might appeal to you. It's sly, calculating and fascinating. If, however, you see yourself as someone constantly arguing your position from the opposition benches, The Art of War might be the more interesting starting point. For the rest of us, both books are relatively short and make fascinating historical and philosophical reading. They probably won't transform your life, but they can certainly give you a useful introduction to some enduring ideas about strategy, conflict, power and human behaviour.
