Flea/Tick Prevention Around the Neck
I received the Hartz Ultraguard Promax flea and tick collar at a discount for an honest review. This is the first time I have used a collar type flea prevention in years. I usually use either a topical prevention or an oral prevention. When I open the plastic bag the collar was in I was greeted with the familiar chemical smell and was glad that I had put on disposable gloves. The smell did not seem to bother my dog Gravy as much as it bothered me. I was able to put the collar on her, size it and remove the extra length without any incident. The collar was easy to cut with a pair of children's scissors. The double buckle is new and useful. I chose the black one because it is a more neutral color for my fashion conscious Gravy the Fashionista. She has worn it for a week so I cannot speak to It's effectiveness, but it hasn't caused any irritation to her neck which is always a concern. It is very early in the season so I'm hoping that the effectiveness of the collar will show itself as spring time brings the onslaught of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. You get two collars per metal container, each lasting 6 months which gives 1 year of flea/tick prevention. For the price this is a great buy compared to topical or oral flea / tick prevention. The only thing I don't like is that every time I get a snuggle or hug I have to smell the chemical older of the collar. In fact being exposed to the collar is the main reason I had not used one for years. This is not something I wanted my children to be exposed to so I used other flea/tick prevention methods. But since I don't have any small children to be concerned about any more I can possibly ignore the smell if the collar is as effective as it needs to be. I did have a question about whether the heart ultra guard promax flea and tick collar prevents infestation from the ticks that carry Lyme disease. I did not see any mention of it in the documentation. If I had that information it might improve my rating.

Skin reaction
To be clear I’m not saying it’s the products fault but just something for pet owners to be aware of. I decided on a collar because our dog just randomly has skin reactions/allergies and has had scary reactions to different vaccines and oral medications. While it’s only 35-40 degrees out right now we recently found 4 ticks on our poor pup just from going out to potty so we needed some kind of protection and though a collar would be best for him. After 2 days he started acting strange and couldn’t settle and would just lay around and let out little whines. Nothing seemed to be hurting him as we checked him over. Even going to vet they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. We never thought anything of the collar. He was clearly in some distress and the only thing that seemed to give him comfort was to be outside in the cold. He would just repeatedly want to go out and just stand out in the cold. He is a dog that HATES the cold so this was really off character. In an effort to try and soothe him we decided to give him a bath and with his fur wet we noticed his skin was all red were the collar was sitting on his neck and because of how the collars work it was causing his whole body to react which is why he gave no indication to his neck bothering him and found comfort in the cold outside air. Again understand I don’t blame this product because I don’t know that similar product wouldn’t have done the same thing and his reaction may not be common but I think more owners need to be aware in case they notice something with their pup’s behavior being off after putting a flea and tick collar on, they could be suffering and you may not realize that the collar is the cause.

It Works!
I was skeptical about the flea collars due to past product / experiences but I think I found the one collar that does work. Now being in Texas with the astronomically hot weather we've been having I didn't keep her outside very long. We went on a brief walk in the trails and after sitting in the shade in the back patio, watching her, I didn't see any fleas whatsoever. So I can honestly say that this product works. Great job Hartz!

My dog has a big neck
I realize that my dog has a big neck. The collar did not fit. I had to rig it with an old collar I had. I use the collars to supplement the oral flea and tick prevention. I use them before and after the main flea season in my area. The collar seem to work just fine. He does occasionally have an itch, but I have found no fleas or ticks on him.

GREAT Product!
Hi to all! Hope that everyone had a great weekend! I have to tell you that I got this flea and tick collar for my old boy who is nearly 13 years old. I was quite amazed that this items was flexible and didn't smell, as I always thought that these did, but they don't. It was easy to put on and adjust. I was happy that he didn't fight me on this, as he really don't like things on his neck and I'm learning more about him, as the days go because I just got him about year ago. He is very sweet and quite funny! I am happy that this doesn't bother him and it will help protect him from fleas and ticks. I am grateful that he is not making a fuss with it on and tolerates it. I think that this is brilliant and lasts a long time. I am not sure if there are fleas here where I live, but I know there are ticks. I wanted something to protect him since he is old. I would recommend this to anyone and it's a peace of mind to know that your pets are protected. Love it!

Absolutely NOT worth a penny
Fleas are tough this year. Even my dad, an exterminator, said they've had an uprise in flea treatments. We've spent money on lawn treatment, home treatment, and these collars for our 3 dogs. The absolute worst product I've put on my dogs. We decided on these collars because of the reviews, and how it was safe for dogs. Tell me why I bathe my dogs this evening and a lot of the fleas I comb off them, are literally hiding in the neck area where the collars are? I'm going back to Bravecto chews. Never will I waste my money again on this product.
