Very deep. Deep enough to hold three tennis balls.

Q: Are these really thin like a lot of current gym shorts today or do they have a little bit too them structure wise?

fairly thin but not flimsy. you can't see through them, but I would certainly call them lightweight. I think the material will hold up well to wash and wear. the shorts have a very stout elastic band - a little more than I would like, but ifr I wasd thinner it wouldn't be an issue. I'm very happy with these shorts.

Q: Are these comfortable for distance running (as in, do they chafe and do they wick effectively)?

Comfortable, lightweight, wicking for long distance. These shorts do not have a compression liner. I feel Chafing would depend more on the underwear you use with them. These shorts do not Chafe.
