A beautiful selection of animation from some of the masters
It was a real treat to look over these illustrations frame by frame. If you're a lover of animation and can get this for a fair price it's definitionally worth it. I love the fact that it's just the raw drawings on display here and not the cleaned-up line work. The little notes and timing tests give such great insight into how the greats made their magic happen. If there was a critique here it would be that the size of these doesn't actually make them the best flipbooks, as it's a bit tricky to hold and flip the pages as smoothly as I would like. Still, I think the size is a good compromise as it lets you see the illustrations. But there may be better options if all you wanted was just a flipbook. These bight-sized bits of animation treasure are meant for lovers of animation and I'm glad to have them in my collection.

Simply Extraordinary
If you are a fan of animation history, or just a fan of classic Disney animation, owe it to yourself to get this set. The set itself is beautiful, well put together, and has a timeless quality that makes it seem like it could have been found hidden away in an attic. The books themselves are wonderful. It's truly inspiring looking at the original pencil drawings from well known scenes in, Fantasia, Jungle Book, Pinocchio, Peter Pan and more. One thing that I really enjoy is seeing the animator's charts, tables, and notes. It's very personal seeing these animations in this way. This collection is a treasure and feels like an absolute STEAL at this price.

How the Animated "Sausage" is Made!
I've read some of the other reviews and it needs to be pointed out that these are NOT art books or coffee table books. These are frame by frame drawings of nine scenes from Disney's animated feature films. If you want to see a variety of drawings from many Disney films, these books are not for you. I'd recommend you purchase "The Illusion of Life", "The Disney Villain" or one of the many other books available. The drawings in these books are not ready for museum display as these are pencil drawings - not inked and without background - and have timing notations, color references, and other notes hand-written on them. These books, however, are PERFECT for those that want to see frame by frame drawings of ONE single scene. These are for students of animation and those that simply want to see how the "Sausage" is made when it comes to hand-drawn animated classics. The timing bars hand-written on these drawings are really helpful to gaining insight to how these scenes came together. Leafing through "The Illusion of Life" (or similar books) is like watching the Thunderbirds at an air show. Breathtaking and awe-inspiring. But going through these flip books is like having the technical drawings of a jet engine and becoming completely immersed in the mechanics of the Magic!

Awesome gift!
I was pleasantly surprised with my purchase. It was really neat to see all the little notes and pictures within the book. I gifted it to my mother and she loved it. I would definitely recommend this for true Disney lovers. It was delivered in a timely manner and came in good packaging.

A treasure for any fan of animation!
If you are a fan of Disney animation, especially the early works, you need this for your collection! The nine old men were around and created one of the best times in the Disney era. These flip books show you frame by frame a famous scene done by each of the nine old men. As a lover of animation it is incredible to own something like this that lets you go frame by frame and see just how much, or little, movement is actually between each frame. Beautifully made with quality and care, this would be a great treasure for anyone who loves animation. I look forward to seeing more beautifully curated collection from Pete Docter, the director of Inside Out and Monsters Inc. Well worth the price!

Great - but one issue
I love the entire idea behind this concept. I pre-ordered this set the moment it was available. But my set has a flaw! Maybe I'm alone, maybe I'm not. But the 'Thumper' flipbook (by Ollie Johnston) has quite a few pixelated drawings for a total of 7 frames. It's a bit distracting. It must be a print error, because the frames before it and after it look great. But these 7 frames are clearly digitally compressed, low-resolution JPEG images. I'll be contacting the publisher about the issue, maybe I just got unlucky. It's just a shame. The rest of the set is beautiful and I haven't noticed any issues with the rest. Besides the flaw: These flip books are wonderful. They are fun to watch again and again. They picked some wonderful scenes of animation. It just leaves me wanted more, much! I could spend all day looking at flipbooks like these. I know this was a personal pet project of Pete Doctor, well he really did a great job, they came out wonderful. The 45 page book / booklet that comes along with it is very nice too. It dedicates a few pages each to the Nine Old Men and gives a good insight into the animation process afterwards. There are some great sketches and drawings in this as well. This would be rated 5 stars if my copy wasn't flawed.

A Great Keepsake
This is a GREAT set of flip books! In a world of digitized pixels, it's great to go back to the basics and see how legendary artists breathed life into the hand drawn line. The only criticisms would be, as others have noted, it would have been especially nice if these were double-sided so that we could enjoy two masterpieces from each artist and it would have also good if we were treated to "never-before-seen" pieces of animation, rather than the same "classics." With so much to choose from, why immortalize the same bits of animation which we've seen before elsewhere? PROS - Beautifully produced. - Gorgeous keepsake box. Heavy duty binding & cover and heavy paper stock - Excellent reproductions (with a few soft focus scans) CONS - We've seen some of the animations before - Pages are one-sided - My original set came with damage to one of the covers (deep indentations), but Amazon quickly resolved.

Fantastic Pieces of History
The "Nine Old Men" are arguably the most famous group of animators at Walt Disney Studios, having worked on some of their most iconic films. They've all since passed away, and this is a beautiful tribute to their work. You get a small booklet with a brief history of the nine men, and nine beautiful hardcover flipbooks with what I assume are final versions of the pencil animations used in the films, one book per artist, in a beautiful rigid felt square chest about six inches wide. Some of the animations are more recognized than others, including the kiss between Lady and the Tramp and a scene with Mickey from The Sorcerer's Apprentice, plus additional scenes from Bambi, Pinocchio, The Jungle Book, Fantasia, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmatians and Alice in Wonderland. You might question why some of the animations were included (why Figaro from "Pinocchio," why the Dinosaur fight scene from "Fantasia," etc.), but it's surprising these were found in such clean condition as it was. For what it's worth, the elephant scene from The Jungle Book was the most expressive, and my personal favorite. I love traditional animation, so I was speechless to have these animations FRAME BY FRAME, some of which have tiny notes added next to them to help in the development. If you love Disney, animation, or art in general, this is a fantastic collection to study from and to appreciate.

Great Flip Books
These nine books are well presented, well constructed and visually brilliant sketch books that create wonderful flip books reminding me of my youth. There is no written content in them, you just benefit from the drawings (which is frankly all they need due to the quality and timeless value of them) The additional book is full of useful information, but the quality of this one reminds me of a traditional Mr Men book. It will last, but doesn't have the hard back quality of the flip books. Whilst considerably smaller than the other books in the Archive Series, they do sit well alongside the other books as the quality and design is consistent. Highly recommended for animation lovers who will enjoy both the flip book aspect and the chance to review scene on scene changes within the books.
