Good Overall Basic Emergency First Aid Book
This is perfect for those who have little to no first aid training. It starts with basic first aid knowledge like how to take blood pressure readings, pulse, temperature, etc. It has handy supply lists at the end of the relevant chapters. It moves onto the more traumatic types of injuries with basic steps to help "stabilize" the patient. The rest of the book deals with general preparedness for various types of emergencies mostly natural disasters with a section about pandemics. Unfortunately, I didn't see any section dealing with social unrest or anarchy which I thought would be very relevant to most urban settings today. I would label this book a well done beginners book. Possibly a nice review for those with more advanced medical knowledge. This isn't going to teach how to suture a wound or drain an abscess. If you are up to that level, this book tells you to do an in person emergency first aid and survival training course.

An essential update for the camping as well as home front…
A half century ago I was deeply involved in survival medicine: all symptomatic, do the best you can with the supplies, medicine and knowledge you have, and try for speedy evacuation if necessary. I did it for a year; Thomas Coyne has done it for a lifetime. He has written a thorough, thoughtful, well-organized and essential guide – for all of us, even in these so-called hyperconnected times, because, well, sometimes we are not.A good rule: Don’t “play” doctor… unless you really need to. During normal times and in most urban areas, there is ample emergency medical care available. There are two scenarios when that admonition breaks down:1. When you chose to go to remote locations, camping and hiking. Depending on locale and weather, it might be one to seven days until proper medical attention is available. What supplies you should carry with you? Coyne helps sort that out, depending on if you have only a backpack or a car.2. When the disaster comes to you, in your home. Most recently we saw many people in the State of Texas, impacted when the cold knocked out the power system for days. There are all the other possibilities: earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, et al. I have a wonderful woodburning fireplace, which heats the half the house very well in winter. As Coyne reminded me, I should have a battery-powered generator to run the fireplace’s fan.The book is worth reviewing once a year if you camp in remote places. With Coyne’s lifetime experience, what to do in emergencies would come instinctively. Still, with a bit of review, and even the book with you, it could make all the difference the ONE time in your life you might need it.A few useful tidbits that I picked up (and will definitely remember!) I once carried morphine in the Army. Today that would be very difficult. Coyne says that ibuprofen and acetaminophen (Tylenol) taken together can approach opiate pain relievers in effectiveness. Backpacking water filters are not appropriate for preparing flood waters for drinking. They do not remove potential viral and chemical contamination. And another one I should have taken more seriously, on pandemics: Both stress and lack of sleep negatively impact immune function.Every household should not have this guide but READ it: 5-stars, plus.

an excellent book.
This is a great book full of a wide range of medical knowledge from treating common medical issues to survival medicine. The book explains this knowledge in a simple and comprehensive way which I appreciate. The book contains many pictures which helps you visualize what its teaching you. Over all I highly recommend this book.

Just what I need
I have zero medical knowledge and it all just grosses me out but...Review for: Survival Medicine: The Essential Handbook for Emergency Preparedness and First Aid Paperback – March 30, 2021I've been collecting first aid kits for years now. I have about 10 of them for my disaster preparation. But I have zero idea what should be in each kit or how to use any of the stuff. You never know when you might use them. This book covers the basics of what I need at least to know what each of the things are for and possibily how to use them:=First aid and survival medicine explanation=A great checklist of what supplies you should have. A few were new to me and I need to pick them up.=checklist for your personal vehicle=what to do with your bugout bag=medical skills you need to know=medical supply checklist. This is key because you can take your random first aid kits and make sure what is covered and what things you need to add.=treating common medical issues=medication and supplies=life saving techniques=Then there's information on how to prepare and covering not just medical supplies but regular supplies in various disasters.=there's a section on each diaster and comments on eachThroughout the book there are great charts, diagrams, pictures. At the end there's a list of book sand websites for additional information.I picked this up at the same time as "wilderness survival guide" and they go together perfect.I really couldn't ask for anything better for a new person.

Good book to have in your library
With the world being such an uncertain place these days, the information in this book might be the difference between like and death. I’m a Red Cross certified medic and I still learned things I never knew. Great information.
