Very Economical Fix - Simple Easy Install - The Perfect Solution!
What a great piece of engineering. These are such a simple fix for shorted wiring that needs to be direct buried. There are other solutions but they seem to place the conducts near one another and rely entirely on the ability of a heat shrink the keep moisture out...this doesn't seem realistic. Make sure to UF direct bury wire, not standard NM Romex. A trustworthy Romex UF on Amazon is the following from Southwire https://amzn.to/43aqbKt Great find! Our outdoor outlets are back in business.

Worked well for me
These connectors worked great for me. They had plenty of gel inside to protect the wire from corrosion.

Costly - But Well Worth It
3M Direct Bury Splice Kit DBR/Y-6 - Trying to connect three 12-gauge low-voltage wires together without the proper connectors is a pain. I've tried various dielectric-filled skirted wire nuts, and some work okay, but this complete solution is the best for me. The wire nuts that come with this are substantial. They fit the three 12-gauge wires and tighten securely. They were easy to grip with the protrusions on either side. The wire nut is guided by grooves on the sides of the dielectric-filled housing, and the connection is totally submerged. The end tab neatly separates the wires and locks in place. I can't imagine a better solution. I have and will use plain dielectric-filled wire nuts for joining a smaller diameter lamp wire to the end of a feed wire, but for splicing in another feed wire, this is the only thing I will use from now on. These are costly but worth it.

Nice quality and easy to replace.
Always wondered what this was. But once we figured out and got this product, it took a few mins to replace the selonoid and connect it using this to the irrigation system.

What you need
High quality wire nuts

Great for wire nutting connections, but not for reuse
Since you wire nut your connections and then immerse then in a gel within the tube, it makes a great seal against water. However, if you need to add a wire, add a light or trouble shoot the circuit, the gel makes a mess. Removing the wire nut from the gel tube removes the gel and it does not all go back in or cover the connection again.

High quality and work great
These are super easy to use and the marettes are high quality which make splicing painless. Only downside is that, once you've plunged the spliced wires into the tube, they'll be covered in grease so it's a mess to make modifications/fixes and the tube probably isn't waterproof anymore once you re-insert.
