What does this item actually do?

It is supposed to stiffen the center consolle where the arm rest is. The original piece is made of plastic and this being made out of steel is more rigid. For me it has been a bit tricky to install because of the airbag cpu which is located below this part. but in general a good workshop should have no problem.
