Q: why does it state 0-5 months?

Not certain but my theory is that baby’s eyes do not see like ours until 6 months of age. Baby can be entertained in crib with the mobile and can provide an object to help Baby focus while lying in crib. Also, Baby will begin to grab and reach prior to 6 months and will actively grab and reach after 6 months.

Q: How does this hang over the crib?

I bought this for my daughter. She just has it thumb tacked to the ceiling. It is still far above the crib, so it is more for decoration than for the baby to actually be able to see.

Q: I received this from diapers.com, the one from there sent me a mobile with a green star. Does the one from amazon have a yellow star?

Mine has a green star as shown in the Amazon photo. Depending on how the light hits the star it can look yellowish.
