Vantec SATA/IDE TO USB 3.0 Adapter (CB-ISA225-U3)

I bought this to replace an aging and failing HDD to USB device I have had for well over a decade. I am familiar with Vantec products so after looking through what they had available for HDD>USB devices I settled on this one. I am very happy with it, it has worked fine for all of my drives so far. If all goes well I will probably keep this one for the foreseeable future.

This little device assembly does exactly what is advertised. On top of recovering data from multiple old hard drives, I can plug in my older internal DVD/CD burner to my new laptop and access all of my old optical disks. Being able to play older CD or DVD games again is cool. There are now businesses who charge a fortune to recover all of your older data and music. This device makes it just too simple.

Seems like a cheap, plastic gimmick, but it worked just as advertised. I adapted SATA, IDE, HDDs & ODDs. All worked fine. I even recovered a crashed external HDD that I was told would never work again. Transferred perfectly. The only issues were getting both data & power cables to fit side-by-side on the IDE drives (plug in data first, then power), and making sure the jumper is positioned correctly. Recovered valuable files I thought I'd never see again. Well worth the while.

I am very happy with this product. I usually read all of the reviews (especially negative ones) before purchasing a product. This one had some not great reviews, but it was something I went against my gut and purchased anyways. I am really glad I did! I had a computer that was completely dead and I thought that I would never get anything off of my hard drive again. This could not have been easier to use. I followed a YouTube video to help with the hook up, but basically it took me 5 minutes to hook up to my dead hard drive and then about 1.5 hours of waiting for the files to transfer. It worked perfectly the first time. I did not have any complaints about the physical product or materials. I ended up getting all of my files off of the hard drive from my dead computer no problem in two hours. I would definitely recommend this product. I will keep this product tucked away in case I need it again, but I hope I don't! It was a great alternative than taking this to a store to fix the computer or recover the files. I'm sure that would have been over $100. This way, I spent around $20, saved a bunch of money, and never had to leave my house! Great product!

I gave my old USB 2.0 disk adapter to a good friend who needed one. I’d had it for many years and it always worked great. So I went looking for an updated product to fill my needs. I found the Vantec SATA/IDE TO USB 3.0 Adapter (CB-ISA225-U3) and got one here through Amazon. It arrived as expected and I’ve already put it to work. First let me inform you what is in the box. This wasn’t at all clear to me from the product page. First, there is the USB adapter itself and a short, about 4”, SATA cable. Then it has the power supply consisting of a wall wart (120v) and the components required to connect to either SATA or 4 pin modular for IDE. When hooked up to a disk drive, my experience was that Windows 10 found and mounted the partitions on the drive quickly. No additional software or drivers were needed. Transfers to and from the drive was as quick as if the drive were internal. The adapter has two status lights that show activity to and from the device. The power supply setup has an on/off switch but does not have a power status light. That is the only drawback I found with this adapter. Overall, I am very pleased with the device and its packing/shipment by Amazon.

This device seemed appealing due to its versatility, but I've barely been able to use it for more than basic file transfers. This interface uses the Innostor Technology Corporation IS611 SATA/PATA Bridge Controller (1f75:0611). The particular device I received has serious issues that prevent it from being usable, but it's not clear whether or not this is a driver issue or hardware issue. I need to be able to use disk imaging, partitioning, and SMART tools on external drives from Linux, but any such operation—even mounting the device to browse files in a file manager—will cause the device to hang for potentially minutes before continuing (if it decides to respond at all). This doesn't happen in Windows, but I had several files get stuck as unreadable and undeletable even just copying/deleting files on a known good SSD. It does technically work for copying files, and occasionally for more advanced uses if I am persistent, but it's not an experience I recommend unless you have PATA drives laying around that need backing up and there are no better options.

I purchased this item because I had an old hard drive that used the IDE style connector (long rectangle with a lot of pins) and I wanted to have access to the old photos from before I was a great Laird. The item worked great. There is one thing that I would like note for potential buyers. I initially plugged everything in and the old drive would appear on my PC for a second then disappear. I thought that I was out of luck; however, I read another review and another buyer explained that you must plug the drive in (minus the USB) and let the old drive warm up for a couple minutes before plugging in the USB to your computer. That was the trick! Once I felt that the old drive was running, I plugged in the USB to my PC and the drive immediately appeared. It displayed just like your C drive. So far it is a great product. Don’t be discouraged by negative reviews. Read the instructions and allow the drive to start spinning before you plug in the USB to your PC. It’s only $15 so give it a shot. Very useful on an internal Samsung blue ray player , DVD writer re-writer , to make it external . I have played a bluray on an M 1 MacBook Air , and yes , I have ripped my first bluray to my MacBook Air , and it plays back smoothly , very good and a lot of fun .

Works great to connect any of your old IDE/SATA hard drives to your computer via USB. I've taken many hard drives out of a computer that I was throwing out only to mean to deal with them later. This allows me to easily retrieve/explore the old hard drives. the USB connection is on the short side, so you'll want to have a place to rest the hard drive. Supports USB 3.0 like the description says, which really helps when copying over larger files. This is also very handy to turn any internal drive into an external hard drive. Highly recommend for all uses!

I have to say this product was critiqued by some of the reviews for being low quality "cheap plastic", when in truth it is a well made product using a high quality plastic on par with the original plastic components we use on our motherboards and other peripherals, so I am actually impressed by just how well this unit is actually put together, as well as how perfectly it worked on both SATA and IDE drives I tested on it with no problems or issues of any kind. Both drive types booted and loaded just as smoothly as when hooked up to a full CPU system, just remember to read the instructions as to when to connect to power and system, and you can't go wrong. It's a great product at a great price for it's capabilities, so I am a very happy and satisfied customer... So there! ;)
