Does this retain its loft with use, or does it compact?

I haven't noticed it compacting due to wear yet, but we've only been using it for a month. It does fluff back up quite nicely in the dryer with some wool dryer balls, which is better than some toppers that were never the same after a laundering.

can you use fabric softener when washing?
