Can air pass through? Looking for a way to dampen sound traveling through heat registers.

Air CAN pass through minimally, but you don’t want to put these ANYWHERE near a heat source. VERY hazardous.

Do the different shapes available for purchase absorb different frequencies or is it purely aesthetic?

The corner panels are intended to capture bass frequencies, since they’re the frequencies you hear in the bleed of walls. None of these panels will “soundproof” your room, however they will help prevent unwanted room reflections. The flat panels are intended to absorb higher frequencies.

are they black or charcoal?

They are not black, but a dark charcoal gray. I've purchased 6 sets (of 12 panels) over a couple months, and the charcoal color varies within each set by a shade or two. Some have a sparkly, metallic sheen, while others are duller. Big variations on exact size of each panel as well. They still look good when installed, and work great for absorbing voice echo in the room (a home voice over recording studio).
