Zoo Med ReptiSand®, 10 Pounds, Desert White

We use this sand to fill several different sized containers in two different habitats for our beloved dwarf hamster. We also used it with our previous dwarf hamster (sadly, they have very short lifespans). They love to roll in the sand, and apparently it helps clean the fur. The sand never sticks to the fur, and it does not make any dust that we can see when they roll in it. It is endlessly entertaining to watch them roll, and our friends love to see videos of it. Sometimes the hamsters will use one of the sand containers as a litter box, and the sand is very absorbent and makes clumps. The sand is always very fine, consistent and pure. We have never seen any irregular sized or discolored grains. Zoo Med seems to have excellent quality control. I think the "Desert White" name for the color is a bit misleading. It is really more of a light tan than a white. But regardless, it is a neutral, light shade that hides stains and does not get yellow, unlike the white small animal soft bedding that we use throughout the main enclosure. I would not use or recommend "playground", "sandbox", landscaping sand or any kind of sand available at big-box hardware stores or garden centers, or beach sand, for hamsters. It could have contaminants, mites, dust etc. We are totally satisfied with Reptisand, and even though it seems to be marketed strictly to reptile owners, we highly recommend it for hamsters based on our own experiences. Perhaps the manufacturer should change the name or add some reference or graphic on the bag about hamsters - "Repti/HamSand" maybe?

I love this sand for my gerbil sand boxes and they love it too. Nice consistency. Clots well. 10 lb bags are nice for lasting longer. More affordable than sands made specifically for hamsters and gerbils.

Made substrate for my lizard & used this & it was nice! Sand is super soft. It mixes well. Not a bad price & is awesome to add to substrate.

This is great sand that my hamsters love to roll and pee in. There is no dust other than the usual is you pour it from a high enough height it'll cause a little bit of dust which is normal for any sand. For the price and amount you get I definitely recommend it.

Very fine, soft sand in a light tan color. I was looking for fine sand to use in an aquatic set up for a Florida soft shell baby turtle. I went on the Zoo Med website and saw that this is their only sand product that can be used for aquatic set ups, so I ordered two 10lb bags. They actually recommend it for soft shell turtles. I rinsed it about 5 times in water in big mixing bowls (split up one bag into 4 bowls). I thought it looked pretty clear, but apparently I didn't rinse it enough because after adding it to the tank with fresh water, it got murky, and stayed murky even after 2 days. I'm going to have to take it all out again and rinse it better. However, the turtle LOVES it and he is constantly burying himself in it or just dancing around on it. I can see his prints all over the sand. He's happy so I feel like it's a good product.

This has been the best sand for my gerbils' sand bath, hands down. It is so easy to use and clumps up their pee like no other brand I have tried. It also feels so much better than other brands and doesn't kick up dust. I haven't had any issues with the smell, and it does a fantastic job. The boys also love bathing in it, washing away any stickiness or oil from playing (sometimes making a mess of their treats). it is also more durable than other sands we have tried, lasting for quite some time. Great value for the money!
