Yes, the bag works well for traveling on a plane. Remember the weight limitation for your specific airline. I have used it twice for international travel. I packed about 50-60 lbs. of material in the bag. I would suggest that you take care in distributing the weight as equally as possible and pack valuable carefully because the bag does not offer the same protection as your average suitcase. If traveling internationally, expected to be stopped and searched, if for no other reason than curiosity as to what you are carrying that requires a long and usual duffle bag.

Not sure how big a croquet set is, but this bag is huge. I fits my Cabelas XL cot with some accessories and still have room.
