How is this latest version different from the last version released by Mattel? (Other than the box design)

Only change I see is the box design (says ages 7+ instead of 5+ now)...instruction card might've changed too (old one mentioned a website that is now defunct & had the age listed as 5+ too).

What age child is this meant for?

The original "Educational Insights" version, with the larger pieces says ages 5+. My 5 year old grandson love the game and does really well at it. I would recommend the "Blokus Deluxe (Amazon Version) as it looks yo have the bigger pieces. Either way, you can not go wrong as this is a fun game for ALL ages.

How do the Blokus pieces get stored? The packaging looks like it's disposable.

Package contains sealable bags, one for each of the four colored playing pieces. The box is as durable as a typical board game box. We played Blokus on Thanksgiving, and the box was fine. While setting it up and putting it away, the box falling apart never entered my mind. It is a convenient size and shape for storage. Certainly, you could destroy the box like any other game box, buy you don't need to take extraordinary care of of it. Don't let your concern about the quality of the box discourage you from purchasing an enjoyable, easy-to-learn game for the whole family.
