Glorious
The film "My Father's Glory" is based on the memoirs of French novelist, playright and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol who was born in Aubagne in 1895 to a schoolteacher and a seamstress. It is in French language with English and Spanish subtitles. Francophiles will recognize Pagnol as the author of 'Jean de Fleurette' and 'Manon of the Spring' , as well as the 'Fanny Trilogy' and will find the same delight in watching this movie as they did in watching the others. The settings and scenery are splendid and the acting is superb. The film glorifies good and wonderful values, some of which have long since then become unfashionable and ridiculed in certain crowds, such as the importance of family, love and respect between parents and children and the importance and role of the father, as well as enjoying the simplicities in life. One feels nostalgia at times that not all families' lives can be this happy.......... ......During a lengthy sentimental summer vacation in the Provence the 'glory' of this father now, in the boy's mind, is put to a test..............and we ourselves perhaps, remember other times, even if they only exist in our minds, when warm and sunny summer afternoons seemed endless and meadows were full of flowers and bees buzzed and birds sang to their heart's content and white clouds moved happily on blue skies and the world was whole.......and one also would like to go on an unforgettable vacation there....having meals like this family at a big table in the shade under a tree and be carefree with family and friends ....these days at the turn of the century, from a seemingly more idyllic time, are upbeat and positive and they are gone forever. M F G is an absolutely lovely film and uplifting to spirit and soul, with the only fault, that I felt very sorry when it was over, however, It promises many other hours of being able to watch it again, simply for the delight of it and to practice my French.

One of the Best
I loved the actors and the story, and the following movie that continues on with the story. It is called "My Mother's Glory".This is a classic movie that will last a long time. Almost everyone I've talked to about it is extremely complimentary and remembers seeing it with much pleasure. It is in French, with English sub-titles, and those who can speak French will enjoy it and also those (like me) who have taken French lessons but are not as fluent as they would wish will enjoy it, since hearing the French will revive their knowledge of the language. My husband does not speak French, but very much enjoyed this and the next part as nearly all who view it will.

Was It a More Peaceful Time?
Nothing to dislike, everything to like/love. Wonderful more-or-less true story--life from 5-12 of a young bright French boy whose father is a teacher, mostly about when they travelled to the hill country for summer and other holidays. Scenery in Southern France breath-taking. Love to hear French spoken (there are English sub-titles). Recommend the sequel entitled "My Mother's Castle"

Delightful French classic
This French classic is a delight. It's dubbed in English, but isn't annoyingly noticeable. Not having to constantly read captions at the bottom of the screen allows your eyes to feast on the movie's beautiful visuals of the Provence countryside. Be sure to follow with watching the equally wonderful sequel, "My Mother's Castle" (likewise English dubbed).

Charming Memoir of Provencial France
This is a slow paced look at a boy coming of age in provencial France. I enjoyed the immersion in a different time, place and culture. If you are looking for action, look elsewhere but if you like intimate character studies, being transported to another time and place and beautiful scenery you may enjoy this film. If you like it you will like the sequel: My Mother's Castle.

absolutely beautiful autobiographical film of vintage France and its lost life -
touching and wonderful story, autobiographical and fascinating, a view of France one hundred years or so ago; this is a beautiful movie in every way. I have eaten bread, butter and hot chocolate for breakfast whenever possible ever since first seeing this wonderful movie some twenty years ago!

Great story, beautiful scenery.
I had seen this years ago in a movie theater. I liked it then, but even better now. Story narrative between father and son is realistic - and also shows how the entire family relates to each other. I'd love to see the companion film My Mother's Castle, but very expensive to purchase.

My Father's Glory
This is a wonderful film about a holiday in the country, in France one hundred years ago. I loved it so much I purchased the second movie in the series. "My Father's Glory" is in French, with the choice of dubbed Enlish or Spanish, or English or Spanish subtitles. If you are like me and don't understand French, and you would like to see the next film in the series you will have to get it as "My Mother's Castle" as it has the same options as "My Father's Glory". "Le Chateau de la ma Mere" has no choices at all other than French.
