Would this be usable in a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

You could use this in an automotive application as a winter block heater, but the size is more conducive to a gen-set or other stationary power applications. There are compact, in-line block heaters available that are more suitable to a vehicle.

How is this able to circulate the engine coolant if it doesn't get hot enough to open the thermostat in the engine?

These heaters are primarily used for off-road engines on generator sets, etc. The idea is to heat the engine block, not the radiator, which would waste valuable energy. If the engine thermostat opens, too much heated coolant goes into the radiator. The hoses should be connected at 2 points on the engine block. These work on the thermosiphon principle. The "hot hose" leaving the heater goes to a higher point on the block, and the return hose from a lower point on the engine drains into the bottom of the heater causing coolant to circulate. Be sure to bleed the air out of the heater and hoses prior to plugging it in! Tech Support @ ASAP

works like it should

these units are designed to provide warm start for standby generators, and this one perfectly replaced the one on our generator that quit working. Haven't had it on long enough to test longevity, but everything else was perfect.
