what is the thickness of these flashing sheets?

It's not flimsy material. Don't know gauge tho. I didn't use it for the purpose intended. I used it for small magnetic boards which worked great even covered with fabric. The edges and corners are very sharp and I used a heavy duty corner rounder to round off corners. I bought 100 sheets and it weighed 12 lbs. contents broke the shipping box but product was not damaged or lost. I will be using it for craft related projects. Hope this helps.

Would these be easy for children to punch holes in using a nail and a hammer?

I just tried it. I put the flashing on top of a piece of a corrugated cardboard and then put everything on top of an old phone book. It works. I guess it depends how old the kids are. The edges are a little sharp and the corners are even sharper. For my project I used a Zutter corner rounder to clip the corners, smoothed them with a metal file and covered all the edges with foil tape. You could probably use strips of duct tape or washi tape.
