100% Merino Wool Balaclava - Winter Ski Mask - Face Mask - Cold Weather Gear

I picked this up mainly because I travel a lot and needed something compact but reliable for colder destinations. Living in Florida, I don’t deal with extreme cold daily, so I didn’t want bulky gear—just something I could throw in a bag and actually use when needed. A merino wool balaclava seemed like a practical choice. First impression out of the package was positive. The material feels soft and not scratchy like cheaper wool blends. That was important to me because I’ve had bad experiences with itchy face coverings before. This one sits comfortably against the skin, even around the nose and cheeks, which are usually the most sensitive areas. In actual use, it performs well in cold and windy conditions. I used it on a recent trip where temperatures were in the low 30s (°F), and it made a noticeable difference. It retains heat without feeling suffocating. Breathability is decent—moisture doesn’t build up too quickly, though it’s not completely immune to that if you’re moving a lot or breathing heavily. What I liked most is its flexibility. You can wear it in different ways depending on the situation: Full coverage for face and neck in strong wind Pulled down as a neck gaiter Half-mask style when you don’t need full protection That adaptability makes it more useful than a single-purpose mask. That said, it’s not perfect. One issue I noticed is that the fit may not be ideal for everyone. It’s slightly snug at first, which helps with insulation, but after longer wear, it can feel a bit tight around the nose and mouth area. Not uncomfortable, just noticeable. Another point is durability. Merino wool is great for comfort and temperature regulation, but it’s not the toughest material. You have to be a bit careful when washing it or packing it with rough gear. I wouldn’t treat it like a heavy-duty synthetic mask. Also, while it does a good job with warmth, it’s not designed for extreme conditions. If you’re dealing with very harsh cold or high-altitude environments, you might want something thicker or layered. In terms of value for money, I’d say it’s reasonable. You’re paying for the merino wool, and that comes with clear benefits—comfort, odor resistance, and decent temperature control. It’s not the cheapest option, but it feels like a step up from basic alternatives. My expectations were pretty straightforward: I wanted something lightweight, comfortable, and effective for occasional cold-weather use. It met those expectations overall. It’s not a specialized, heavy-duty piece of gear, but it does what it’s supposed to do without unnecessary complexity. If you travel often or just need a reliable face covering for winter activities like walking, light hiking, or casual outdoor use, this fits the bill. Just don’t expect it to handle extreme conditions or rough handling.

I bought this to wear under a thicker, polyester balaclava so I have a natural fiber against my skin. Alone, it doesn't do much to mitigate wind. However, even in 20°F chill, it keeps my face warm without holding in any moisture from my breath. If there's a wind, I use a fleece lined polyester over this and I'm well protected from cold without the bulk of a thick balaclava obstucting my vision. This is the least expensive 100% merino wool balaclava I've found and it does exactly what I expect. The fit is good and not tight, won't smash your nose. The sewing is well done and the seams are comfortable.

My nose runs a lot in the winter when I just wear a sock hat, and this balaclava prevents that. It's heavy enough that I simply use it as outwear and not a base layer. Didn't need any other hat with it. Kept my head, face, and nose warm in 10 degree F weather. Light enough that I can use it in 20 F - 30 some F weather without getting too hot. I have a smaller and narrower head for a man, and I have to position it carefully on my face to get a good seal. I estimate that it will fit a man with an average size head just right, but a woman might have to wash it a few times to get it to shrink enough to get a tight enough seal to keep the cold and wind out. If it gets too warm to keep the bottom "flap" up over your nose, you may want to remove it or switch to a sock hat instead of pulling it under your chin. I pulled the bottom "flap" under my chin a few times when I got too warm, and realized I would stretch out the balaclava and ruin the "seal" around my nose and mouth if it did it too often, so I stopped doing that. Since it's 100% wool, it doesn't have the stretchiness of other fabrics.

I recently bought this balaclava for bear, deer, and elk seasons where I was tired of playing around with a neck gaiter. I was originally looking at other companies but I didn't want something that was too bulky, and I really like the color choices that Minus33 had so I figured that I would give them a shot. Also, I really hate when products brand their logos on every square inch or make them some loud color so everyone knows what you are wearing and you seem like a billboard. I like high quality, low key items, and this one fit that bill. When the balaclava arrived, I was really surprised by how thin it was. That did initially worry me because I thought that 'midweight' would have been a little thicker, but I figured that I would give it a go this last weekend in a camping/hunting outing where temperatures were between 22F-48F. The balaclava performed awesome to my surprise. It is thin enough to allow you to breathe well, wear hats and glasses with - without getting in the way or being uncomfortable at all. In fact, after about 45 min, I didn't realize it was on my face. It did not obstruct my view or breathing, it kept my face warm and dry, and there is enough give in the fabric that you can pull it down under your chin to eat, drink, smoke, or whatever and it didn't seem to stretch out. The most important test was inside the tent. At night my face usually starts getting cold at some point and I wake up and then try to cover my face with a bag or roll a hat down on my face which inevitably comes off and then it a never ending cycle. With this, I slept all night with it and even tossing and turning kept it on pretty straight. This was a real winner. I would have given this product 5 stars if it was made in the USA and not China. The stitching is good, the color that I got (forest green) was great with other products, and the material feels excellent on the skin. If you are in the market for a lightweight, comfortable, affordable, and warm balaclava, add this one to your list and give it a try.

Super soft, warm, and not itchy at all. Fits great and easy to adjust for different uses. Perfect for cold weather without feeling bulky.

This Balaclava worked for my cross country ski trip in northern Washington state perfectly. Just the right amount of warmth, not too hot not too cold. It is breathable over the nose and dries quickly when you sweat. Loved the blue color. The merino wool is soft and good quality. It washes up well. Kept the wind out with no need for a hat most days.

I've used this solely for under-helmet while riding a motorcycle. It's thin enough that it doesn't affect helmet fitment very much, but warm enough to make a huge difference during the ride. It's a good fit for my head/face (I usually wear between a M and L in moto helmets). I love that it's 100% merino wool and has basically no smell to it. The length is substantial enough to go down into your shirt and allow for high collars to come up over it with plenty of overlap. What you get is a nice seal of your neck and face away from the wind! It has kept my neck and head warm enough while riding even down into the teens *F. Thus far, I've washed it 2-3 times in a delicates zippered pouch (cold water cycle), and air dried it (doesn't take long), and it hasn't yet show any signs of wear. Hopefully that continues for many washes!

It’s not terrible BUT the hole is too small for my face which interferes with ski goggles. The mouth portion became very loose after moving it under the chin once and then it never mated with the bottom of the ski goggles well and just made them fog up faster. The length on the neck is great and it does a great job at keeping me warm. It’s A LOT thinner than I expected. Build quality seems okay.

Good quality Merino wool, really the only wool baclava available so it was worth it. Obviously don't rely on it just as for the cold. 9/10

Great garment. With the merino wool it keeps you warm and cosy but you can still breath. Sweat wicks away and it washes well. I got it for my son who is extremely active outdoors in the winter months, his a a large Male head and it fits perfectly

Me llegó en perfectas condiciones y a tiempo. Me hubiera gustado en color negro, lastima que se agote muy rápido. Pero el color azul es oscuro así es que si me gusto mucho. Probare esta semana andando en bicicleta, a ver q tal.
