I don't think so. My tissue box cover is in my bathroom where it is subject to lots of steam from hot showers. After a little more than a year, I've not seen so much as an outline of the holder on my counter top.

You do have to be careful. I have mine in the bathroom on a glass shelf. Works great!

Q: Are the first several tissues from a full box ripped when pulled out?

Sometimes; but, it's a function of the way the tissues are factory-packed/folded into the cardboard box and have to be pulled through its plastic opening at the midpoint of the fold. The ripping has nothing to do with the nu steel tissue box. Suggest pulling the first several tissues from the cardboard box before covering it with the nu steel.

Q: What material is the tissue box? Stainless steel, chrome, or plastic?

I don't think it is steel, but it is metal with a chrome finish. I'm really happy with mine - I have a lot of Mid-Century Modern furniture and it fits right in. Unlike others I have had, it is lighter weight which makes it easier to replace the tissue box.
