I Hate Fairyland Volume 1: Madly Ever After

Oozing with Charm and Fun
This book is absolutely incredible and was impossible to put down once I started! A little girl is sent away to "Fairyland" and is given a quesg to find a key to return home. Fun and cute! ...Untill it takes alot longer than initially expected. Full of blood, violence, and gross-out humor that is a blast to follow. For around 10 bucks, you'd really be missing out if you passed it up.

Sick and twisted and wonderful
A friend recommended this to me after I said how much I loved Young’s Little Marvels. The premise sounded fun, a 37-year old woman trapped in Fairyland, in a 10-year old’s body. The reality of that was...um…unexpected.This book is psychedelically colorful, sadistically violent and absolutely not for children. Gertrude is magically transported to Fairyland after making a childish wish. There she must complete a quest to find a key that will take her home. It shouldn’t take more than a day, but 27 years later she’s still at it. And she has become bitter about the whole thing. Very bitter. Extremely bitter. Kill anything that moves bitter. When the Queen brings another child to Fairyland in a plot to get rid of Gertrude, the consequences are not what she or Gertrude expects. This is not your everyday comic series, and I can’t wait for more. Recommended, for those who don’t mind their fairy tales dark and twisted.

Fluffing Great!
Gertrude is a force of nature and was greatly underestimated by her adversaries. If only her key detection skills were a bit better, then she might have had a more glorious vs gorious time.

GORY AND CUTE - My Kind of Special.
I HATE FAIRYLAND is pretty much right my twisted little alley. Gory, full of dark humor, and quite quirky. Essentially Gertrude ends up stuck in Fairland for 30 years.....making her pretty much making her a completely insane sociopath. Fairland still has its dark and light aspects and sometimes the lines become blurred where certain creatures fall.Young brilliantly created a character that has grown and yet is simultaneously stunted. She doesn't clearly understand actions and consequences. She tends to just DO....and normally that translates into lots of blood and guts.Although, I was entertained during this volume, I felt it was missing a little bit of depth. I thought on this personal feeling a lot and think it has to do with Gertrude's motivation or lack thereof. I mean, yeah she wants the $*%# out of Fairyland I get it, but there didn't seem to be anything beyond that. I know I admitted that she was a sociopath, but typically even they have their own motivations. The combination of gore on the cutesy background is twisted, disturbing and I loved this aspect. It really brought the feeling of Fairyland alive in a unique and disturbing way.I Hate Fairyland, Volume 1: Madly Ever After is brilliantly gory and creative. I really can't wait to see what the next volume has in store for Gert.

This outdoes the Addams Family for gruesome humor.
When Stephen Speilburg made Poltergiest and then ET, he stated that he had to make Poltergiest in order to get all the meanness out of soul so he could make ET. Well, Skottie Young spent years going OZ comics for Marvel, and if I had to guess, I'd hazard that "I Hate Fairyland" was his catharsis for getting all the sweetness and innocence of OZ out of his soul. Fairyland is an over-saturated land with saccharine overtones that mask the true darkness of the place. The purpose of the residents is to kidnap little girls and send them on a "magical" quest to find a key so they can return home. Gertrude, our dark heroine, gets pulled into Fairyland and sent on such a quest. However, she isn't too bright and can't figure out the riddles she is given as hints. Twenty seven years later, she STILL hasn't found the key, and not one of the residents has lifted a finger to help her out. She's a cynical, angry, frustrated thirty-five year old woman, trapped in an eight year old body, and she is intent on getting out of Fairyland, no matter who she has to kill to do it. This is definitely NOT kiddy fare. But it is a very fun read! Skottie Young has never failed to please!

Dark, twisted and oh-so beautiful
I saw this comic in passing at a local book store. I didn't think much of it but out of curiosity I skimmed through it. It drew me in immediately. If your a fan of dark humor or just looking for a lighthearted tale with the occasionally spurt of giblets pick this book up. I've read ALOT of comics and really I cannot think of a comic like this one. It's a parody on classic tales like Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz, but the main character Gertrude gets trapped in Fairyland and wants nothing more than to go back to the real world. Its unique, different and the art is amazing. The drawings remind me of 90's cartoons but the coloring is beautifully vibrant. If this was a TV show it would be on Adult Swim next to Rick & Morty. Actually while I write this Rick & Morty is probably the closest thing I can compare this comic to. It's great just get it!

Fun comic, although next volumes may get boring
I found the comic very fun, although I think that after finishing the first volume, it may just be a one-trick-pony - the humor is essentially entirely based on violence.
