Either your game is corrupted from being old/used so much or you need a new Gameboy (is it just a specific game that won't save or is it every game you try and save?) I don't think getting a new battery for your gameboy will help the problem though.

It's either a bad battery or a dirty/faulty power switch. There are some videos on how to clean the power switch on youtube. Try gently squeezing the area around the switch if it flickers or stops momentarily while squeezing the area it could help you narrow it down. Be gentle because the switch is soldered directly to the motherboard.
