There is a small door that swings up in the back. Though I have not had any need to clean as of yet, this access should make it easy.

are they able to get in without a perch?

Birds do not need a perch to get in a bird house. I think it’s nice for them to have a perch but they don’t need one. The house is really cute and has a back door so it’s easy to clean out when needed.

What kind of wood is it made from?

Not sure. Possibly a pine or balsa. Very light, like a 1/4 inch plywood. Fairly well made but with cracks. I used a silicone seal in areas of concern. Overall a nice product. Metal roof should increase lifespan outdoors
