Does it require a water source... or does it collect water from the atmosphere like a solar still?

No - it needs water placed in it. I tried salt water and it worked. Was V_E_R_Y slow but it worked. HOWEVER.... I used it three times and on the 4th time, the black base / filter came apart. I was not impressed and would NOT recommend this device

How is the distilled water extracted without getting contaminated by the sea/dirty water?

It comes out of a plastic tube from the main compartment. Caveat - the darned thing DISINTEGRATED on me within about 5 hours (yup, that's all) use. It has a black, porus base and this came apart from the translucent plastic surround. I would not recommend this item. It worked and worked extremely effectively (albeit slowly) but 5 hrs was ridiculous.

Question 3

The package says that you need to replace it every 5 years.  Does this include if you store it in a dark, climate controlled, place?

I have only just bought the item, but logically stands to reason that ideal conditions for the material and an airing out every so often that the plastic materials would last a lifetime. Neglected in a no shield from environment elements and I could see it not holding up. But you might still get at least 5 out of it in the poorest conditions. But I live in Washington state. So our humidity isn’t even comparable to basically any direction of here.
