Q: Is there any reason why this can't simply be used for food storage, like coffee beans?

In my opinion you could get an Oxo Poptop container for coffee bean storage. This marinater would probably do the job but it is MUCH better at marinating meat. I plan to buy a second one this summer.

It’s 2.5 Liters so approximately 84 fluid oz

No, use mine for coffee, tea and cereal. good for brown sugar as well
