Do I need to scrub off any protective film and then season it or is it ready to be used out of the box?

Accepted Answer

It is naturally seasoned...nothing you have to scrub off.  Out of box - wash wok and ready to wok.  Do not soak wok and always dry immediately after washing.  Try not to wash with liquid dishwasher detergent because you want to build up a nice patina, and wok will become naturally nonstick (like cast-iron skillets).  Wash with hot water and dry. I bought mine from Walmart, paid $50 for it, have not used it once.  I was wiping it down and black kept coming off onto the rag. Now it looks rusted.

Since the wok is cast-iron, just season it like you do cast-iron skillets.  Was the wok with hot water, (don't worry about the paper towel being grey or "soiled" when you wipe dry.  Coat in and out of wok lightly with cooking oil, veg. oil, or peanut oil or best is flaxseed oil.  Place in oven upside down and bake for about an hour at 400 degrees.  Wok will season and have a nice patina.  Let cool in oven, remove, place on stove and stir fry a handful of onions until charred rubbing and tossing up and against the sides.  Discard onions, wipe wok, wash with hot water and good to go.  The wok is iron, not toxic or harmful.  The more you wok, the better and more season the wok becomes. Enjoy. The Wok Shop

When I wipe the wok with towel, there is always black stuff, and when I cook vegetables, they all turn back, what could be the issue?

I have had this wok for about 2 months, and I still get black residue on wiping it with a paper towel. I have not used soap; I wiped it as instructed. I've even put it in the oven for an hour at 400F. Simply saying don't worry is not a good enough response. Is this safe, and why? We have black iron skillets, and they season well.
