You can't install it flush, but it comes with a very short rod (4or so inches)

Can the 6" downrod be cut down to a shorter length?

This would not be advised as the downrods are not set as able to be field cut.

Does this fan make any noise when operating even at low speed. Some fans make a low hum. Does this fan make an electrical humming noise at low speed?

There is a very low noise, almost white noise, which is not bothersome. We sleep with the fan on all the time in the second slowest speed and it’s actually soothing. You can’t hear the noise if there’s any sound on, like music or tv, only in silence.

What does "manual reversing switch on motor" mean for the ability to reverse airflow with this fan?

Hi Jessica,Thanks for the question. This means there's a switch (similar to a light switch on your wall) that you can flip so that the blades on the fan spin in the opposite direction. In the winter time, it's best to have the blades spin in the opposite direction so you can circulate the warm air that gets trapped high up on the ceiling. We hope this helps.
