SABRENT 3-Port Aluminum USB 3.0 Hub + Card Reader, Mac/PC (HB-MACR)

I'm not gonna lie: I'm pretty cheap sometimes. I thought it was probably fine to buy cheap, no-name peripherals like USB hubs and card readers. I actually only bought this Sabrent USB card reader because I liked how it looked. I wanted something heavy and substantial, that would not move around every time I bumped the cord, and this device is certainly that. It has considerable heft and a foam rubber base that keeps it firmly in place.Aesthetically, it is fantastic, surpassing what I was hoping for in form and function. It does not look like a cheap toy sitting on my desk, and as I often meet clients informally at my workstation, it has always bothered me that a lot of adapters look out of place on a professional desktop. This makes me feel like I have a modern day old Swingline stapler. It is a serious tool for a serious professional, not a piece of junk for a kid's Minecraft rig.As soon as I took this out of the box, I was satisfied with it. So, imagine my surprise when I learned that I have literally spent months or years of my life waiting for file transfers because I didn't buy this sooner?I immediately noticed that this Sabrent card reader has much better data throughput. I plugged this device into the same port my old one was in, and nothing else changed. Whatever Sabrent does when they build this card reader, they do better than the off brand stuff I've been buying most of my life. The same SD card, the same USB port on the computer - and at least 30% faster throughput due to higher and more stable transfer speed.I bought this looking for a pretty desk accessory, and discovered that it not only makes my desk look better, it does data transfer a whole lot better. I debated over this for a while before I finally bought it, because I didn't realize it was going to also boost my productivity. I recommend this hands down, because in spite of the fact that it is one of the more expensive card readers on Amazon, it is a better value than the other card readers are. This device delivers a satisfyingly substantial feel and top-notch performance. I only wish I had bought it when I first considered it.

This works very well and, when connected to a USB 3.2 port, is very fast (dependent upon media, of course).It does have a rather short cable, though. And, lesson leaned here, if one expects to use an extension USB cable, be sure to get the USB C variant of the hub. Finding a USB A to USB A 20Gb/sec cable is, um, difficult. Fortunately, I had a USB A to USB C adapter to use to test, and it works fine, so I've ordered a 20Gb/s USB C to USB C cable.As others have mentioned the hub seems very well built, and it definitely does get warm when connected.

Not much to say about a USB peripheral. They either work or they don’t and this one electronically works great.I mostly use the microsd card and have noticed it is possible to “miss the connector” internally when inserting, and the card keeps sliding into the slot further than normal, never seating.The first time it happened i wasn’t quite sure what was going on. The card was inserted, but never felt seated. A little investigation indicated that the card must’ve missed the connector internally either too high or too low. This device is quite stylish and the front has a nice angle to it; it takes a little finesse with the small micros sd card to match that angle while inserting. I have it mostly figured out now but occasionally the card still slips past. Also, with this little card fully inserted, there’s not much card remaining exposed to easily grab and extract when complete. I use the micro sd cards for 3d printers so this gets a fair amount of use.My opinion is, if you are only using microSD cards, this may not be the best unit for that but i cant say anything bad about this unit, its elegant and works as described besides this little quirk. And to be fair, this may be a fluke and i need to do a warranty swap, but hey, im still using it so i’ll let you judge how much it bothers me :-)

UPDATE [JUNE 24 2016]:I was able to contact Sabrent and explain the situation with the SD cards not reading. I received a quick response, and he let me know that he was sending me a new 100% working USB hub completely free of charge. He even tested the product personally to make sure it was working. I received the replacement in 2 days and it is working exactly how I want it to. I previously gave this product a 2-star review, but because of the excellent customer service, I have changed my rating to 5-stars. Thank you, Sabrent, for the excellent customer service![ORIGINAL REVIEW]The USB ports are upside down, despite the box showing that they are upright. This is not a huge issue, unless you have USB devices with LED's on the plug, or something similar. The SD and Micro SD card readers do not work, which was a huge selling point for me. I do not have a CF card so I can't say if that works or not, but I am willing to bet that it doesn't. I tried plugging the USB hub into another powered USB hub, in hopes that the card readers would start working, however they do not!The product looks nice, and to be honest, the USB plugs work exactly how I expected. However, the card readers were a must have for me, and having them not work is upsetting as I cannot find another product that has the the same functionality while also looking very nice. If the card readers worked as advertised, I believe I would give this USB hub a 5 star rating.

The “3Port Type A” works great with my Mac Mini M1. Just purchased the Mac Mini M4 so this hub will be much needed for USB A and the card reader. Bought in 2016 and still beautiful as an addition to my equipment.

Update:Well, this is the second one I have purchased and while they are great when they work, the second one died in 1 year. I am going to have to try a different brand and I don't like that as I made a custom holder (3D printed) to hold this and all my storage (SD, micro SD Thumbdrives...) and will have to reconfigure it all to work now.I first purchased one of these in early 2018, I loved it so much I 3D printed a desk mount for it that also holds all my USB sticks and SD/micro SD cards. Well the card readers started to slowly die, the micro one about a year ago and now the SD one is acting up. Mind you I am a photographer and these slots have seen thousands of cards if not tens of thousands so 6 years is pretty good in my book.So, of course I just purchased my second one to replace the aging original. I am so glad they still make and sell this model as anything else that has the same slots and USB ports is just a square brick and thats no good, this one also takes up a lot less real-estate than the brick ones.

What first drew my attention was the design. In a small package you get both a hub and card reader. I got a new iMac 5K and the iMac has the worst placement of the SD card reader ever! So I needed an easy access card reader. This combines a small unpowered USB 3 hub and card reader. It's a nice solid unit with rubber bottom to help keep it from sliding around. As far as operation, first the hub. I've plunged several USB devices and hard drives and had no problem with this powering the drives. Sometimes unpowered hubs have problems supplying enough power for hard drives, this one has worked great. Next the card reader, first there are known problems with this working with iMac with El Capitain OSX. They have a fix on the web but for me this did not fix the problem. The hub worked fine but the computer would not recognize the card reader. I posted on Sabrent's tech support site and they had me try a few things which did not fix the problem. After informing them that the card reader still did not work they then sent a replacement unit that works fine. I can't ask for more. On top of that I think it's reasonably priced as well. It's not much more than a single purpose USB card reader adapter.

Bought a new computer with just a few USB ports, bought this to use for keyboard and mouse, external hard drive and USB headset. This works great.

mooi afgewerkt en ook esthetisch. Veel mogelijkheden, zelfs voor Compact Flash wat tegenwoordig moeilijker te vinden is. Functioneert bovendien prima.

Bello ed elegante, solido e ben fatto, funziona molto bene, testato con TF CARD va una scheggia.Molto soddisfatto. Due parole le spendo anche per la confezione in quanto merita, davvero ben fatta.Degna di oggetti molto più costosi.Sabrent è una marca che conoscevo già per i dischi Nvme, che tutt'ora vanno veramente molto bene.Consiglio l'acquisto.

Das Gerät macht was es soll. Bei mir ersetzt es 2 andere, einmal der Kartenleser und auch den USB-Hub.Aber warum muss man die CF-Karte Kopfüber einstecken? Das ist nicht schlimm, aber man muss daran denken da die kleine Stifte im Leser sehr delikat sind.

Es algo caro pero vale mucho la pena yo uso Mac y tengo pocos puertos, esta herramienta me facilita mismorocesoa de edición y respaldo sin problemas puedo usar discos duros, memorias USB y SD para descargar o cargar información y nunca me falla. La estética y los materiales son 10.
