I bought one 64gb and it has printed the same but it actually has 32gb when i looked into my windows system. why is it so?

Have you looked at how the flash drive is set up? There's an outside chance that it merely has 1 primary partition set up as 32gb and 'unallocated' space that is the other half of your storage. For this you'll need to look at the drive with Disk Management in Windows to see how partitions are configured.

Is the usb-a connector backwards compatible with usb 2.0 ports?

Yes, it should be but without the same transfer speed as 3.0.

How many pictures will the 256gb sandisk hold?

A 256 GB Flash Drive will hold roughly 150,000 pictures. Or, it will hold about 50,000 pictures and 35-40 hours of movies together. At least according to my math from investigating data about this.
