Great Performance at a Great Price! You can spend more, but why?
Works great! Purchased one for an upcoming portrait shoot and was so impressed I purchased a second unit. Not exactly intuitive to assemble, but after you set it up a couple of times it gets easier. As for a light modifier, you can certainly spend more for some of the name brands but you won't get any better results! The Neewer 30"x30" Octagon is just the right size for portable or studio application and the mating speed rings make attachment to the strobe head very easy and secure. All around a great addition to my lighting inventory.

Not bad for the $$$$
Overall the quality seems to be very nice for the price and the light produced by the octabox is wonderful. My only complaint is the grid was for a softbox not the octabox that I ordered. Not a deal breaker for the price, just kind of annoying not getting the right products described in the ad. Assembly is such a pain and can take quite some time to put together on location.***I'm bumping the product up to 5 stars. The customer service was beyond fantastic getting the new grid shipped to me. It did take a few weeks to get the new grid, but they were out of stock and it had to ship straight from the factory.

How to put this octobox together
I'm going to perform a public a service and explain in detail how you assemble this octogon softbox! The included speedring works only with certain lights. It does not work with Bowens, or White LIghtning strobes. There are eight metal rods included. Each rod has a small insert and a larger insert. First you will need to insert all the rods into the main section of the octobox. At the outside edge of the octobox there are velcro tabs. These at first appear to be sewn flat into the octobox but there is an opening that allowed you to insert the smaller end of each rod into it. Insert all eight of the rods into the eight velcro tabs.Install your octobox speedring onto your light. Take the octobox with the rods installed and insert one of the large ends into an insertion hole in the speedring. Then insert a second rod into the opposite hole on the speedring. Select one of the rods next to the first rod you inserted and insert that into the speedring. Go back and forth from side to side till all eight rods are installed into the speedring. It becomes increasingly difficult to insert the rods due to pressure from the octobox's curved shape. Now install the 'backside' section of the octobox (a separate piece that also has a silver interior). There is a velcro strip that you pull apart to open this piece up. You will see how its sections match the sections on the first, larger portion of the octobox. Attach the wide velcro strip onto the matching wide velcro strip on the outside of the main section. You press the two parts of the octobox together, encircling the unit to complete its assembly, via these velcro strips. It took me several attempts to learn how to correctly fit this piece in place, but it will be simple to do next time. There is an interior light baffle that clips inside of the octobox (just as with any softbox). The front face attaches via velcro as with any regular softbox. You will need to insert the face as far inside as the velcro strip allows or you will not have a good fit. The velcro strip is wide enough that you can now attach the grid. The grid has eight 'sides' and when you begin attaching the first section (side) be sure you center it within that octobox section. Each subsequent section of the grid you attach should be centered within its octobox section. The first time I did this the grid fit flawlessly on the face of the octobox. It does a very good job controlling the light shape, keeping it forward only, rather than the wide light spread you get without it.The interior is I would call beaded silver. With the interior baffle and front face you should achieve excellent contrast and a light that is not too hard or too soft.I have not timed assembling the unit but with experience I believe I could do it within ten minutes. When disassembled I will leave the eight rods in the folded main section, and it should all fit within the nylon carry bag. You disassemble the unit in the reverse order from what I've detailed.Product quality is moderately good; certainly an excellent buy for the money. The achieved light quality should equal that of units costing many times more. Most octoboxes are more difficult to assemble that regular softboxes. It is certainly more difficult to assemble than a "brolly box", but this designed for use with studio lights, not speed-lights.

well made metal speedring octobox with rods
Some of the reviews here seem to be for a different item. I ordered this based on the photos, and yes, i got what was on the photos. its a speedring octobox with metal rods, double diffusion and a grid. very well made for the price. hard to put together unless you have fone thus sort of thing before. one of the slots in the speedring has a grooved slot that makes it a bit easier for one of the rods with a ball-bearing like end. light quality is excellent for this, no color cast i can detect. this is NOT an "easily foldable" octobox or such, it is nice for the studio. on location, a pair of vice grips make dissasembly easier.

Within my reach
I have tried out a very expensive equivalent at a recent products fair. Whilst I was impressed with it, I am only a seasonal photographer, so I cannot really justify such a big outlay. So, having read some of the reviews on Amazon, which are mostly positive and complementary, I decided to buy one made by Neewer. Although a challenge to assemble (I did not see this taking place at the fare due to it being already assembled), I got there. In use, it is absolutely spot on. I’m so pleased to be able to benefit from one at a much more approachable price.

Do not buy this! your welcome
this is one of my worst purchases so far and I live out side the us so I cant return it so im gonna have to just give it away. it literally takes 1 hr to set up it isn't practical and also to pack up is a chore. search for it on YouTube there's a guy showing how to assemble it and he has to be using herculean strength to put it together and take it apart I wish I had watched that video before I bought it but I have bought it with the newer speed light which is fantastic but this is not so. BEWARE do not buy, you are welcome

Get the 30x30 and you won't regret it
Received the 30x30 grid octagon softbox for Christmas 2014, and am writing this review about two months later. It took 15-20 minutes to assemble the softbox, and assembly is not a task I would want to do often. The 30x30 softbox is a great size, small enough to put in the trunk or back seat of the car yet big enough to take nice portraits. I've taken photos of one, two, and three people with great results. Shot a headshot of a family of three this past weekend, and exposure/shadowing was good on all three. Shot wife and husband opening presents at a baby shower, and the mother-to-be termed the photos "WONDERFUL". I team the softbox with the Neewer S-type bracket holder and it's very stable (liked the S-type bracket holder so much I bought a second one). Photography is a hobby for me, but in my opinion this softbox has quality, is nice enough for professional use, and should last a long time.

effective and value for money
Firstly, there were no assembly instructions with this soft-box and it took a minute or two to work out how I was to assemble it - tip - put all 8 rods, narrow end into the Velcro pockets around the lower skirt and, one at a time put the thicker end into the Bowens mount. Be confident with bending the rods as they are quite durable and go in easily if you bend them right. It actually took about a minute to assemble, once I worked out how to do it.The soft-box comes with an inner diffuser, an outer diffuser and an egg-crate attachment that velcro's to the inside of the skirt/cover for further light diffusion. In terms of ease of use, there are better soft-boxes out there, even made by Neewer, but this one, for what it does is extremely good value that can't be matched. It is really quite well made as I have found all Neewer products to be and I have been using them for a number of years and they have remained perfectly serviceable and reliable. So much so, that they are my go to brand for much of the photo and video equipment I buy. Anyhow, this remains a bit of a palaver to put up and down, but it is not so much as to undermine its value and usefulness in the photography studio - it is a good product.
