Q: Would they work to make the waist of my pants a bit smaller?

I am sure you could figure out where to place another button in your pants to attach the hole closest to the button on the extender to. Then you would have extra holes to place your pants button in.

Q: what size are the buttons? 1/2 in or 3/4 in.

It is a half inch button, still works in a 3/4 button hole. I know this because that is what my husbands work pants are.
